  • An illustration of how wrong migrations can go - on a previous occasion when Deshar's flight was being discussed, I found this list of osprey sightings in the Azores, the islands everyone was hoping he would find. Ospreys don't breed on the Azores, so these birds must have come from either Europe or North America - and these were the lucky ones who found their way to land. 

    I see there has been a new sighting in the last few days on Flores, which is 1100 miles from mainland Portugal and 2000 from Cape Cod.

    The overall total for 2010 was 177.

    Best ever year was 2004 with 196, 2nd best 2006 with 182.

    Re above......on Autumnwatch last night we heard an observer telling Roy that an osprey had previously been seen, flying over the pass, which is high up :O) !! clutching a fish, just like having a packed lunch for the journey. That was news to me and not something that would have ever, even have crossed my mind.

  • 1 migrating osprey counted at the Swedish watchpoint at Nabben,Falsterbo yesterday making a seasons total of 312.

    2010 total was 229.

    Mean for 1973 - 2010 is 262.
