SUE C many thanks for that interesting link. Fascinating to think that osprey both breed in Spain (following the reintroduction) and migrate to Spain to over-winter.

October sightings in Holland are up from 213 in 2010 to 324 in 2011. Individuals observed are up from 236 in 2010 to 341 in 2011. Looks like it has been an excellent breeding year in Scandinavia.
UK October sightings are down from 120 in 2010 to 50 in 2011.

Thanks Alan. This is close to Sandy and The Lodge - it's probably the same one that's been seen there several times recently.

Thanks for the updates Alan. What a huge drop in UK October sightings compared with 2010. I know that the appalling early breeding weather had a major impact on successful hatching and fledgings this year, but could it be that a lot left the UK early in August and September because of an unsuccessful breeding season. Were the numbers up this year compared with last year in Aug/Sept? Or is the low number of UK October sightings worrying?

Wow, thank you IanH. How wonderful to see a visiting osprey, but perhaps you should have a quiet word, and suggest it might be time to head further south now!!
Ian H I see there was another report on 26 October about your visiting osprey.
IanH : Thanks for the info. Great pic by the way.
SheilaFE : Sightings were down in August and September so it is not a case of them leaving early. Just less juveniles around due to the number of nests that failed. Roy says this has happened before but did not affect the overall increase in breeding pairs.
