  • It is just wonderful to see Rothes again.  Many thanks Nigel.

Sorry to interrupt folks. Sue contacted me as a result of a shot of an Osprey that I had taken last week in the Gironde Estuary. I have joined your community and posted more pictures of Rothes in my gallery. I should say hat the light was terrible and the bird was quite far away, but I think the pictures provide some interest for you Osprey experts.

Sue, I have no problem with you using the shots.

If you like, you can check out my other birdie pics on

Agh --I tried to make the 5 stars and all it took was one then it came up report abuse

    It should  be 5 stars!!!

  • Nigel - Wonderful pictures and to be able to see the Darvic ring so clearly although any white darvic ring on left leg and a sattelite aerial had to be one of two birds although the other Mallachie (Rothes sibbling) has not been heard of since her transmitter stopped Dec 2009 in The Gambia. Any Darvic Ring sightings positively identified by photographs are most very welcome. Now is she a he. My guess seeing the bird at first glance would be a he.

  • But why Keith ?  (just trying to improve my observational skills)

  • Nigel, I follow this website from Australia, and it is really wonderful to see your photos of Rothes.  We have all been following her progress through her satellite tag, but to actually see photos of her is just so special.  Now we all know she is well, and very beautiful.

Cirrus, Keith is probably considering the near-absence of any 'necklace' markings in her adult plumage, usually an indication of a male Osprey.  Think of the difference between EJ and Odin.  However, having thought of her as "her" for 2 years, I'm prepared to wait and see what happens when she finds a partner!!!!!  ;-)

  • Nigel : Amazing pics of Rothes. Having followed Rothes from when she was just an egg I am absolutely delighted to see a picture of her again after 2 years. Thank you so much.

  • Nigel

I can't tell you how happy you've made me.  It's wonderful to see one of 'our' family of Ospreys in the flesh again.  Thank you so so much.  I can almost hear the excitement of us all sitting at our computers today - lovely to be part of it all!

  • I wonder if the damage to her(?) flight feathers as noted by Barbara gives us a clue as to why she hasn't flown on to Scotland. Would the imbalance between the action of her wings and the loss of lift be enough to make it risky for her to make more long flights, and therefore she is staying put until the feathers re-grow.

  • WATTLE    - THANK you for that information.   I never thought of that Another piece of the jigsaw for me.

If only there was some way to repay Nigel  for just letting us make free with his photos of Rothes. Not that I have . I'm waiting for the more experience bloggers to have noted they have, but I'm itching to copy them to my folder l

Sheila , Hello again (Jane here :)    )    hope you are thriving

  • Nigel--you're a star!. You've made so many people so very happy including me. We wait all summer for Rothes to return to her native Scotland and you cleverly photograph her unaware that she has masses fans waiting to spot her. Thank you so much--it's fantastic  to see her again--your shots a wonderful.

  • Cirrus.

Click on Tiger's link for Nigel's site on page 3 ( I think) When Nigel's site opens, click on the osprey, it will enlarge it, then click on it again it will then apear on a black screen. Top right on the pic you will see "all sizes", click that, then a larger pic of Rothes will come up. Along the top of that pic you will see all different sizes, click on the last one that says "original". It will be a very big pic and you will have to use the sidebar to scroll down and the bottom bar to scroll across until you get the pic centre. You can then see Rothes darvic ring!! :-)

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • Thank you Sandra     :)

  • I thought I read that they replace their feathers every two years. But the don't replace then all at once. Some one  with  more knowledge correct me if I am wrong.

I wonder when Rothes damaged her flight feather. That may explain  her meandering  in  Northern Africa . She may have been  trying to get her  balance with a  damaged flight feather. It is clear she looks  well and can fish just fine. In time that feather will be replaced with a new perfect one.

The  damaged feather looks quite bleached out from the sun so maybe she is due to replace it soon.

Does anyone know if they grow a new feather sooner than  normal if one is damaged?

The last picture in the second row  shows her spotting her dinner LOL
