Thought I would open this thread to save clogging other threads with photography questions, discussions, test pics, etc. Plus easier to find.
From a recent discussion with NiteOwl re Sony Cybershot HX100V, I had promised to post a couple of comparison shots between it and SLR plus Sigma lens at full zoom.
Here you are NiteOwl
First Canon 30D and Sigma at 500mm
and Sony at full 30 x zoom
Not brilliant as both taken through window glass, but gives an idea of what this little bridge camera is capable of.

Interesting
The slr and sgma loks a little sharper but really not much in it

Hi Chloe,
I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, but there is a forum devoted to photographic discussions, with lots of interesting stuff, comparisons, tips and advice etc. (Currently being mis-used by some contributors but hopefully the Mods will move some of the threads that belong elsewhere). http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/wildlife/f/19351.aspx
By the way, I agree that bridge cameras are underestimated and are capable of more than people think!
Cheers, Linda.

Now a couple of shots of Budworth Mere, Cheshire, taken with Cybershot.
First without zoom
and full 30 x zoom focusing on church, right of centre
Is the second picture cropped
None of them are cropped andrewa.
The pics were purely to demonstrate the cybershot's zoom capability for NiteOwl's benefit as she plans to buy this camera, not as a technical review of either camera or lens.
I still love my SLRs and lenses, horses for courses, but this is a great lightweight point and shooter with a superb zoom range and I love it too.
Hi ChloeB Thank you so much for putting those photo's on for us, the zoom on the Sony is brilliant! We called into a Jessops shop today but they had none in stock, but we were able to have a good look at the display one and had a feel of it too, it is very comfy to hold and all the buttons easy on the fingers too. I'm off to online shop as he told us there were a few on just now, so I better be quick! lol:)
Nice to see you Andrewa, I will check out some of your photo's soon! thanks! :)

You are welcome NiteOwl, hope you manage to grab one online :)
Thanks Chloe B
I use a cannon EOS system but at present my Cannon lens capability is 300mm and hoped to fit a 1.4 converter.
I have haerd that the auto focus may not work with the lens as it is a good lens so that may mean buying either 400 or 500mm.
I do like the capability of the Sony and the zoom and probably is a good point and shoot so may invest in this as well.
The DSLR is sharper on your first roof top picture.
Thanks
Chloe if you are there I'm just in the process of ordering SD cards for the Sony.. are SanDisk Extreme HD Video/SDHC compatable? please.:) Thanks.
I have a 1.4 converter Keith. Sometimes the AF works and sometimes it doesn't. There is a way to tape the pins but I haven't tried this myself.
Andrew, sorry I didn't answer your question. Here are the details of both shots just out of interest. SLR was on shutter priority at the time but I didn't bother about settings too much as it was just a comparison of lenses at full zoom rather than anything else. The Sony was set on auto (Superior auto setting)
Yes that card is fine NiteOwl :)
Thanks Chloe, I will go and order some now. :)
Thanks for the info chloe. The zoom on the Sony is really good.
Keith unless the 300 mm is an F4 then AF is very unlikely to work
