Ospreys are wonderful to behold.  The eyes really have it for me together with the dedication and will to bring chicks into the world and will sit through anything the weather throws at them to make sure their families get the best start in life.  Their gentleness with their chicks is just marvellous to watch, how can a bird like this with enormous talons feed their young so tenderly.   A part of my life for ever and I will never tire of watching them, how lucky we are that we can.

To me Ospreys are charismatic and still an enigma. I love to watch them rising from water, that ''end'' bit of the wing first - held high - and the strong downward beat to create the lift needed. Their eyes are a marvel and can swallow me up when they look direct into the camera. And as with all animals they definitely have their own personalities and emotions. If Ospreys were people I'd be doing my best to make friends with them all.

Cirrus:   Love the bit you say, about  "their eyes are a marvel and could swallow you up.."  as I am always transfixed by EJ's stare at the camera, it is a special thing to be gazed at, unblinking, by a predatory creature.

So what is it about the osprey that makes it such an exciting bird?

What is it about Osprey's

It is ~ EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM

It is ~ How they get under your skin and inflict you with Ospreyitis

It is ~ Those eyes especially when they look right at the webcam is if they know thousands of people are being captivated by them

It is ~ Their individual personalitis and little traits, EJ & Odin are like an old married couple, doing the housekeeping, him going out for the messages and bringing back fish "again"!....  its when EJ doesnt quite know what to do with the clump of moss and moves it round the nest in every decreasing circles, its looking like they are a happy married couple!

It is ~ the head wiggle, left to right, back to left and right again (I love to see them do that)

It is ~ Their dedication into reproducing each year (doesnt happen for all of them) but they sure try their hardest

It is ~ Their ability to look after their chicks in such a caring way.

It is ~ Knowing how arduous a journey they make each year and the dangers they face, (Young and Old)

It is ~ Their intelligence of knowing how and when to protect their young from any intruder and for the chicks instinctively knowing when to play dead.

It is ~ The calm way the Chicks react when being handled at ringing time, they are so placid and quiet, but when met with an intruder those same chicks can be courageous and challenging to all who approach.

and that my friends are just some of the things that Ospreys mean to me!
