  • Wedneday 2nd May, 2012

Here's a summary of events for the above mentioned date.  Weather can be best decribed as sunny after a misty start.  Please feel free to correct me on anything that needs corrected.

At just after 5am the day cam switches on and the nest is shown in misty surroundings.  EJ is in residence.

07.11.  EJ flies off for a break and is replaced by Odin for his first incubation stint of the day.

08.21.  Odin is "releived" from sitting by EJ.  The quotation marks are becasue he absolutely loves egg sitting :-)

09.29.  Odin returns once more to allow EJ some respite.  She returns at 09.41 and after the usual persausion, Odin leaves.

12.39.  Just over half an hour past time changing from am to pm, Odin The Magnificant brings a FISH.  EJ happily flies off to eat, and Odin happily incubates.

13.51.  Odin calls EJ to the nest.  A male Osprey can't sit about for too long.  EJ The Phenominal returns at 13.52.

14.38.  EJ is pictured standing off the eggs and panting.  Thankfully we can talk about warm weather at LG :-)  She recommences incubation after a few minutes.

15.13.  Intruder Alert!  Odin flies in persuit.  The eggs are left for a few short minutes as the nest is defended successfully.

    15.21.  EJ remains very alert.

15.31.  EJ ducks occasionally, as though a potential invader flies above her.  She also sends out alarm calls.

15.54.  Odin arrives.  He relieves EJ of incubation and nest guard duties, and brings with him a FISH.  EJ flies off to eat.

16.18.  The streaming cam is down.

16.51.  The streaming cam is back on, and shows a much better quality of picture.  Odin is on the nest.

17.39.  EJ returns to take over from Odin.

18.32.  Odin comes back with a clump of moss.  EJ remains on the eggs and chirps.

20.03.  EJ leaves the nest for a break, and Odin returns.

20.56.  EJ arrives back at the nest, and Odin's long respite on the eggs is brought to a finish.  He must've enjoyed nearly an hour incubating.

21.28.  The night cam comes on.  EJ is now shown looking her usual fantastic self, in night vision pictures.

A massive amount of thanks for all the updates, pics, vids etc posted by everyone on today's Daily Update.  Without which, this summary wouldn't have been possible :-)

  • THURSDAY 3RD MAY 2012

EJ seems to have had a disturbed night with all kinds of unexplained noises

When day cam comes on at 5.05 EJ can be seen in all her glory in a beautiful, clear and colourful spectacle with a fairly heavily misted background.

5.58 It is obvious that poor EJ is VERY tired. She couldn't have got much sleep last night. (vid p3 5.58)

7.10 A surprisingly early Odin arrives with about half of a FISH Remarkable that he has managed to fish in spite of the fog. (vid p9 12.46)

8.32  EJ returns giving a little chirrup, which encourages her beau to leave whilst she settles on the trio of eggs

9.19  EJ starts calling, and egg turning

9.47 Odin arrives and EJ departs

10.12 It certainly seems to have warmed up at LG as odin is seen panting (vid p6 10.12)

10 25 EJ seen relaxing in nearby tree

1042 And she has moved to the large dead tree nearer the nest

11.13 Odin still on the nest, talking to the eggs (vid p7 11.13)

11.32 EJ comes back to the nest and a rather hot Odin retires Later EJ herself is seen to be panting

12.34 Odin arrives back and carries out a little HW whilst EJ constantly chirrups It takes her  a full 5 mins to get up  and depart and to leave Odin to it

1.22 Odin distracted by something above the nest, and he's panting again

1.31 EJ returns and takes one of Odin's tricks of moving a big stick and odin gets the message and flies off.

2.09 Odin returns bringing a large stick which he drops on poor EJ's back, then her head, before placing in a more suitable position. As he does so, he

practically sits on EJ, who gets up, scolding. Odin doesn't get his way to incubate as EJ fairly soon returns to the eggs and so Odin departs.

                                                                        (vid Moffer p10 2.23    Scylla 2.23  Rob.t B 2.24)

3.30 Odin comes with the second FISH of the day (Vid Moffer p11 3.30/  Rob tB 3.30/  Scylla 3.37)

4.35 In between dozing and a bit of preening, Odin calls and EJ obliges by returning. After an enchanting conversation between the 2, Odin flies off into the distance (vid  p12 4.44)

    6 17 Another smooth exchange (vid p13 6 .45)

6.21 Mary GK reports that she is at LG and it has been glorious weather and a good day for fishing as "long stretches of the R.Spey flat calm"

7.22 EJ comes back to her incubating duties(vid p14 7.28)

8.00 She is talking to Odin (?)

8.21 She seems to be having probs getting comfy (vid p14 8.21)

The waether has been superb but the forecast is for cold and frost Lets hope dear EJ does not have too miserable a night

A lovely wealth of videos today and captures Thanks to all

  • What a great summary, that sums up the day nicely. Thank you

  • Friday 4th May 2012.

Sunny spells and heavy rain showers dominate the weather, with strong wind when it rains.

    08.52 EJ returns

10.30 Odin returns with a stick. EJ leaves the nest. video by CC on page 4 of DU

10.38 EJ returns and pushes Odin off the nest. Video on page 3 of DU

The weather for the rest of the day is squally hail/sleet showers with strong wind and sunny intervals but it remains cold with a high of 5C. EJ sits through it all until

15.48 A whole large FISH is delivered to a very hungry EJ. Video by Scylla on page 7 of DU

16.25 EJ returns after eating the whole fish. Video page 7 of DU

17.13 Odin returns and they swap places. Odin drops a stick on the eggs after EJ has flown. Video by Robert the Bruce on page 9 of DU and a compilation of the last few comings and goings by Scylla also on page 9.

17.27 EJ is back and she picks up a stick, Odin leaves.

A few very heavy sleet/hail showers early evening. EJ is seen to eat some hail.

18.15 EJ starts calling. Odin is seen in the dead tree where he remains until

19.40 Odin calls in at the nest with some moss. EJ does not move from the eggs and he soon flies back to the tree.

19.30. A weather report from one of our chatters "on the ground", Mary GK who was at LG today. " it was sunny most of the afternoon but it was still freezing, the icy wind would cut you in half, and even as I type I look out and see that is snowing!  this weather is weird.    Some people are going about sunburned from yesterday, oh well it will keep them warm now."

Thank you all for your pictures, videos and comments today. It has been cold, wet and quiet, but still Ospreytastic! Tonights forecast is for rain/snow showers. I wonder what we'll find in the morning.

13.38. Odin brings in a big stick. EJ leaves and he sits.

14.17 EJ is back with her own stick. Odin leaves.

15.06 Odin flies in for a short visit.

18.37 Odin brings in bark. After picking up a big stick, EJ leaves.

  • SUNDAY 6TH MAY 2012

    c. 6.20 To our relief, and more especially the ospreys, the sun starts to put in an appearance.EJ and the nest both look beautiful.

7.29 EJ gets a visit from a Great Tit (see capture st this time) and perhaps it is after EJ's moulted feathers for its own nest

8.00 Odin arrives with an impressive bundle of moss/grass and egg sits after EJ has flown off (vid p2.8.00)

8.12 Lovely sound of cuckoo calling...although Odin himself seems unimpressed as he was dozing. (vid p2 8.19)

8.46 EJ returns with her own sample of moss and its Odin's turn to leave ( vid p3 8.53)

9.17 EJ insistently food calling. Probably starving after yesterday's meagre repast.

10.07 EJ seems unusually alarmed by a 'plane flying overhead (vid p4 10.07)

10.10 EJ once again shouting for breakfast

10.37 Short burst of snow/sleet flurries

11.25  A large portion of headless FISH delivered (vid p5 11.34)

12.39 EJ returns but, interestingly, sits at the edge of the nest finishing  her fish right underneath Odin's nose(?) whilst at the same time chirrupping reassurances to the eggs.(Vid p6 12.59)

A disapproving Odin departs, leaving EJ still consuming her fish

12.49 Eventually EJ stops eating and settles on the eggs once more

13.36 And Odin is back, with no gifts of any kind. EJ is soon gone and Odin has a look around before taking up egg duties, his favourite pasttime. (vid p6 1.37)

1.45 EJ is seen sitting in the dead tree

(cf Moffer's compilation vid for around this time p8 4.22)

2.30 Odin is still on the nest ......and panting! (vid p7 3.04)

3.18 EJ returs and Odin doesn't hesitate to leave and EJ, just as quick, settles on the eggs (vid p8 3.39)

5 26 And an excited EJ accepts that wonder of wonders a SECOND FISH  and it is WHOLE  A proud Odin incubates the couples developing offspring (vid p9 5.38)

6.33 EJ responds to Odin's calls and returns to the nest With a little bit of a wiggle she settles on the eggs as Odin disappears into the distance (viv p9 6.40)

EJ looks particularly beautiful in the late evening light, just as she did in the sun at the start of the day. She looks settled and relaxed and at

9.33 when the night cam comes on, she maintains this look, just occasionally moving her head.                                                                                 Good Night dear EJ Have a good one. At least your appetite must be appeased. Here's hopes for a good tomorrow for EJ and Odin and ospreys and other birds everywhere

Thanks to all for posts/pics and vids without which the summaries would be impossible

  • MONDAY 7TH MAY 2012

We saw the 7th arrive in a very cold fashion (minus 2 and fog) with EJ wearing a coat of frost (photos on page 1 of DU) and progress to  heated dramatic scenes with an intruder at lunchtime and end in a calm balmy afternoon/evening.  loads of fantastic photos and videos which tell the tale.  This is probably not the shortest summary but so many happenings....

    Fish deliveries = 2

Potentially only 8 days until we may have an Osplet arriving in the nest

The days highlights are as follows:

    02:53 EJ awake and stretching

    04:50 Daycam on

05:11 Visit from Odin, after pottering on the nest for some time EJ lets him take over the eggsitting (Video on Page 2 of DU from Scylla)

07:00 A thawed out EJ returns to the nest

07:50 EJ starts calling and is rewarded with a lovely clump of moss

08:49 A cuckoo calling startles EJ and she starts to call for breakfast (alas EJ will not get breakfast, she will have to wait until lunchtime)

09:08 Odin is standing guard over his EJ and soon to be be chicks as noisy crows can be heard in the background (video  and photos on page 4 of DU from Moffer)

09:55 Odin flies from the camera post (video on page 4 of DU from Moffer)

12:00 Intuder alert and EJ is divebombed twice.  EJ screeching (video on Page 5 of DU from Moffer)

12:12 Intruder photgraphed in tree (photos on page 5 of DU from Birdsong and Moffer)

12:14 Intruder back and trying to land, EJ mantling and screeching - intruder dramatically falls over the edge of the nest with a bang and flies off (video on page 6 of DU from Moffer)

12:31Intruder back in tree watching the nest - has he got a nasty plan or is he just an interested lonely Osprey (photos on page 6 of DU from Moffer)

12:41 Odin the Magnificent returns with a whole fish, EJ takes fish and leaves, Odin gives a couple of calls and settles onto eggs (video on page 7 of DU from Alan Petrie)

12:53 Intruder returns to upset odin's equilibrium.  Odin alarm calls (video on page 7 of DU from Moffer)

    13:01 Odin alarm calling again

13:11 EJ returns from lunch and gives Odin a fright (video on page 9 of DU from Scylla)

    13:14 Odin leaves the nest

13:14 - 1853  Peace and quiet reigns in the Kingdom of EJ and Odin.  Odin has been absent since 13:14

13:14 - 1700 In the human world there is great debate and discussion on who this interloper could be

17:42 EJ moves eggs and settle back down onto the eggs (video on page 10 of DU from Moffer)

18:53 EJ calls and flies from the nest for a 30 second comfort break

19:50 EJ starts to shout loudly

19:52 Odin the Magnificent returns with supper.   Not a huge fish, its half eaten but hey it is probably the first he has eaten today.  EJ leaves with the fish and Odin settles onto the eggs (video on page 11 of DU from Moffer and photos on page 11 from Birdsong)

20:25 Update from LG Osprey HQ to say that they believe the intruder to be unringed

20:35 EJ returns from supper, sorts out her eggs and settles down, probably hoping that there is no more drama for her to deal with today

21.15 Night cam on and so is the rain.

Thanks to all for some great photos and videos today (particulary Moffer who probably has not managed to get anything constructuve done today)

    to be continued tomorrow........

  • TUESDAY 8TH MAY 2012

Fortunately, it has been a quiet day after yesterday's traumatic experience with the intruder.

Our friend(?) the rain returned and poor EJ spent another wet night. When day cam came on she looked very wet indeed.

5.54 Odin makes his first visit of the day, bringing a small clump of moss. EJ leaves immediately and Odin soon settles on the eggs. (vid p2 5.57)

                                                                         (vid p2 6.02)

7.02 Odin still on duty on the nest

    7.28 EJ returns (vid p2 7.30) (vid p2 7.39)

10.27 Odin comes to egg sit but no joy. Raining heavily.

Rain continues throughout the morning, stopping briefly now and again.

12.38 FISH ....whole....and still alive. And handsome boy settles on the eggs. (vid p5 12.52)

1.43 EJ returns witha long branch and Odin has to duck. She then does an "Odin" by placing it partly on Odin's back. He gets the message and promptly retreats. EJ proceeds  to carry out a little furniture rearranging before a wigglw-waggle onto the eggs.

3.10 Dry, but sounding pretty windy.

Just after 4.00 EJ starts calling and just over 15 minutes later.....

4.16 Odin arrives with a headless , but still a good size FISH. Thus we have ANOTHER 2 FISH DAY making it the 3rd consecutive day. Odin takes his turn on the eggs. (vid p6 4.23)

5.02 EJ reappears and Odin says "Welcome back." (vid p7 5.09)

6.10 Seems a little less windy and EJ is sunbathing

6.27 Suddenly starts raining heavily but luckily doesn't last into the latter part of the evening

632 Odin makes 2 visits to the nest making a lot of chirrupping as if something has disturbed him but EJ seems unconcerned (vid p8 6.44 / 6.52 /6 53 /6 .56)

    8.20 EJ leaves and Odin takes over (vid p9 8.20    p9 8 26)

Turned out to be a lovely evening

8.53 EJ returns for the night

And its Good Night from him and Good Night from her ( with talons crossed for another 2 fish day.)

  • Wednesday 9th May 2012.

A day of sunshine and showers, 2 FISH and a lot of to and fro-ing with no new sticks brought into the nest!

A dry night, that stayed above freezing for a change! EJ slept with just the occasional turning of eggs.

    05.23 EJ starts to call.

06.09 Odin arrives with half a FISH. EJ takes it and leaves. Odin sits. videos on page 2 of DU

08.06 EJ returns and Odin flies off.

08.25 A heavy prolonged rain shower started. Sunny spells and heavy rain showers dominate the mornings weather.

09.04 EJ turns the eggs and moves a stick.

10.13 EJ leaves the nest and Odin resumes egg sitting duty.

10.36 EJ is back and Odin flies off

11.39 Sees EJ stretched out flat protecting the eggs against a very heavy rain shower.

11.48 Odin is spotted in the dead tree.

12.00 EJ gets up with the rain running off of her and turns the eggs. She calls Odin.

12.05 Odin comes to the nest to take over. EJ leaves.

12.59 Odin is still on the nest. It has stopped raining and the sun is out. Odin is panting!

This afternoon is dry with a lot of sunny spells.

13.00 EJ returns. She nestifys and has to ask Odin to leave.

    13.45 EJ is panting now.

    15.17 EJ starts to call.

15.18 Odin is calling on his approach. EJ is very excited.

15.15 Odin appears at the side of the nest with a LIVE, WHOLE  FISH. The second delivery today. Well done Odin. Video on page 8 of DU

15.58 Odin starts to call EJ back.

16.01 EJ returns with her lovely chirrups. Odin leaves.

16.23 Odin is back again and EJ leaves.

17.12 EJ is back again as it starts to rain. Odin asks if she is sure before he flies.

17.56 After calling for a few minutes, EJ leaves the nest. Odin appears to look after the eggs.

18.35 EJ chirrups onto the nest. Odin doesn't get straight up, so she pokes him with a twig! He gets up and leaves.

19.00 It starts to rain again, and continues to rain all evening.

21.26 EJ is sitting on the nest looking soaked through again.

21.29 Night cam is on.  I think that's it for today.

Many thanks to all who post on the DU. Without your comments, pics and vids, this job would be near impossible, so thanks again.

  • THURSDAY 10TH MAY 2012

Another two-fish day and sadly far too much rain for everyone's liking!

01.55  EJ has shuffle and gives great view of eggs!

04.26  EJ goes for quick fly and returns

    05.17  She starts calling

06.25  It starts raining.  Ominous sign of day to come!

06.32  FISH!  Minus the head but a good size (DU, p.2)

07.47  EJ returns to nest and Odin leaves (DU, p.3).  Still raining

07.57  Odin returns, drops small stick on EJ's back!  She ignores the hint and stays put (DU, p.3).

    08.01  Odin flies off

08.42  EJ moves and resettles on eggs.

09.07  EJ stares at something off screen, which passes without incident.

11.06  EJ leaves nest.  Odin flies in with stick and settles on eggs (DU p.4)

11.46  EJ returns to nest (DU p.5)

12.08  EJ turns eggs, moves moss and resettles.  Lovely.

12.23  Odin captured looking magnificent in distant tree (DU p.6)

12.27  Rain seen to have more or less stopped.........YESSSSSS!!!!!!!

12.34  A drier EJ turns eggs again, gently.  That bird must have the patience of a saint.

13.36  Serious weirdness. Odin flies in and puts stick on EJ's tail - she stays put.  He then puts another stick on her back - she still doesn't move.  I've heard of men treating their wives as part of the furniture but this is ridiculous.  Odin gives up on trying to shift EJ and off he goes (DU p.6)

At this point it has started to rain again - it keeps it up until about 9pm.  Dreich, indeed.  That's a very descriptive word.

13.54  Odin seen in dead tree (some beautiful shots taken!)

    14.00  EJ starts calling.

14.03  She gets insistent.  Odin stays put in tree (DU p.7)

    14.47  EJ calling again

15.04  EJ very alert and Odin has now gone from dead tree (DU p.9)

16.07  NEW BLOG - John Ingham

16.27  EJ calling again.  Has quick flap to shake off water and mostly dislodge that stick (yes she sat with it on her back for all that time!!)  (DU p.9)

16.52  EJ starts calling again.  She stops a minute later.

    19.00  EJ calls quietly

    19.01  1/2 FISH (DU p.10)

19.44  EJ returns.  Odin leaves with a minimum of persuasion.

20.35  EJ has a wriggle and resettles on eggs.

20.39  Odin shown in tree.......with brolly courtesy of Badgie!  Bet EJ wishes she had a real one.

21.10  Rain virtually stopped.  At long last.

    21.30  Night cam on.

A bit of a quiet day but I can't blame the wildlife for sheltering on such an awful day.  Many thanks to all contributors as this summary would have been impossible without you.

    Stops raining for a while

12.25  Just after EJ takes a quick break Odin arrives with FISH....headless but fat and a VERY reasonable size. (Vid p8 12.31/Moffer  p8 12.31 R the B)

1.52 EJ comes back home (vid p9 1.52)

2.16 Starts to rain again Heavily.

    2.46 Pause in the rain

2.56 Odin reports for egg sitting after EJ has flown (vid p10 2.58/  p10 3.18 CC)

3.08 Poor Odin has only just about got comfy when EJ returns, but so too does the rain (vid p10 3.18 CC/ p10 3.18 Moffer (x2))

3.40 Once more EJ is calling and grumbling and also wingersizing before returning to incubating (vid p11 3.45)

4.10 Odin is seen in his favourite tree ( Great captures 4.10   4.32  4.42)

By 4.36 the rain has stopped again giving EJ a bit of a chance to dry out

4.54 Odin has finished his stint in the tree and his preening and comes to give EJ a well-earned rest (vid p12 5.16)

Whilst he is on the nest, the rain  begins once more......and then stops.

5.48 The sun puts in an appearance

    6.10 Rain....for a change

6.42 EJ returns after a nice long break, and Odin shoots off (vid p12 6.44)

7.10 EJ is heard food begging

7.33 Odin comes...but not with fish . Instead he has an enormous branched and leafy stick., which he has great "fun" trying to place. EJ isn't sticking around and makes herself scarce. Odin tries to sit on the eggs but the stick proves problematical and he has another attempt at moving it(vid  p13 7.34 CC/ 7.36 Moffer/ 7.39 Scylla)

8.00 After all that hard work, Odin has a doze

8.11 EJ thinks it safe to return (vid p14 8.12 Moffer / 8.17 Scylla)

8.30 Odin is briefly heard but not seen (vid p14 8.31)

At least the evening seems to have been dry and EJ looks better than she did at the start of the day. Let's hope that the non-existence of rain at LG persists through the night and on through tomorrow so that it can be a 2 fish day as hatching no. 1 gets closer.

9.47 Night cam and EJ looking quite relaxed. Have a good night dear heart.....and you too our handsome boy

A day of frustration as the live cam went down at 4am.......and stayed down.  EJ was seen to be asleep at 12.38am - quite right too, at that hour.  The day started nice and sunny and happily Odin took advantage of this to bring EJ a FISH at 08.20 (nice one, Birdsong).  EJ returns to the nest at about 09.02.  Odin comes back about 12 minutes later to deposit a stick on EJ (this is becoming a habit, and a strange one at that!) and leaves her about 5 minutes later.  Odin is again seen egg-sitting at 10.39 - EJ returns at 11.40 and off he goes.

  • Whoops - hit the wrong button there!  Where was I?  Ah yes.  EJ the Beautiful went for a quick fly at 1.24 and quickly came back to egg-sit. Some fresh bark was spotted on the nest a few minutes later - assumed to be brought by Odin but can't be sure.  Odin then appears for a photocall at 1.30 and quickly flies off.  Unlike him to be shy!!!!  Odin took another turn at egg-sitting about an hour and a half later and EJ was back on the nest by 3.30.  Odin couldn't stay away for long, though, and was back on the eggs at 4.04 (some lovely pictures!) - EJ returns from sunning herself at 5.35.  She earned that, bless her.  Odin returns at around 6.25.  EJ's not gone for long, she returns at 6.38.  There appears to have been a final changeover at 8.14 - at some point EJ returned and was seen turning the eggs at dusk.

Apologies for a less organised summary but the lack of a live camera has made things difficult and I think everybody has done really well to observe this much, particularly the fish delivery.  Let's hope for a better day tomorrow.  Saying that, at least EJ and Odin have enjoyed a dry day - that's worth a lot!
