  • LOL at the idea for a cartoon fish :)

  • A video of Garten from 2009

  • Tiger

I feel sure I heard cheeps in the period just after midnight. In the past cheeps have been heard from unhatched eggs.

My knowledge of bird anatomy is very limited, but I think cheeps are created by vocal chords, which need air passed over them to work. Is an egg shell permeable to air, ir is there enough air in the air sac in an egg to enable cheeping?

Oh I think that would be a much harder question to answer and need much better equipment than we currently have here.

If the the webcam gets up and running at Dyfi in time for the hatching then we might get much better evidence.

Other than to say that there have been cheeps which have seemed to come from the eggs it is not really possible to say.

  • I am not sure anyone has seen chicken's eggs hatching. It has been a long time but I am pretty sure that you can hear them cheeping in the shell.

  • I haven't seen chicken eggs hatching for a very long time but I thought you could hear them too.

I found this just now which agrees with what you are saying Tiger.  Chicks chirping in eggs.

  • Thanks for the Garten video clip Tiger. That year I did not follow the LG ospreys having been too affected by the Nethy Wee Yin episode. I then followed intermittently until last year. This year, thanks to freedom from not working, I am completely involved. Looking forward to the next few hours :-)

  • The video was wonderful TIGER.  I wonder whether Garten will even be seen or reported of again.

Glad you enjoyed it. Well I feel that if any bird comes back it will be her.

  • ChloeB   Thanks for confirming that my memories are not erronious.

TboL    It could well be a rollercoaster this year too. People say they home for quiet seasons but deep down they probably don't. If ospreys were predictable there would be nothing to watch.

  • I have just noticed that "Life of Ospreys" by Roy Dennis now seems to be a rare book.

  • Just so that it may be easier to find. Here were JSB's calculations of the likely hatching dates.

Now question is. Was it the first or the second egg that hatched?

  • Yes Egg#2 is 35 days today. I would say more likely Egg#1 but possibility of #2. I wonder if this will be clarified on the blog? If it was #1 then #2 shouldn't be far behind and vice versa.

I have this book and it is a good thing. I just  checked Amazon  here in the USA and nearly fell of my chair when I saw the prices it is  selling for . The cheapest "used" copy  is $107.00 and a new copy is $173.00.   WOW anyone with this book better put it in a vault .  Click on the  prices and see the  more expensive ones. They go up to  nearly $300.00

  • SCYIIA   Just a picture to show you how well all 3 all Char X chicks are doing and the little one is getting its fair share of food.....I wish you could hear the din when they are being fed. A few adult feathers are also appearing
