Yes, to confirm, here is the official LG pic. If you click on it to bring up the largest resolution you can see AA1 very clearly.
OOPS looked again and Caledonia's ring AA1 reads top to bottom while Alba's ring AA2 reads bottom to top! Now there's a thing! :)

Does anyone remember Odin delivering a fish around 11.45 pm a few years ago?
Has anyone noticed that Caledonia is holding a drink in her talon? :)
Glaslyn do not seem to have heard of the new ring system either. See here

I notice that about Glaslyn rings too then forgot to mention. Must have been using up old stock.
Is there a new system or are they just coming to the end of supplies of the old rings (I know that they weren't sequential at some nests last year as they were using up stock) and due to the increase in numbers have moved to a 3 digit code. I read one of the bloggers say that AA was for LG but is this just Roy's first ringing of the year & they're the first out of the pack & AA3 will be his next one used? It would get very confusing for ringers if each site had different 2 letter codes (they can't even get the rings the correct way up or on the correct leg!!!!!!!!!!! lol)

Vespa. There is a new system Europe wide as far as I know. Each country now has a colour code. The UK is considered as one country and has blue rings.
Germany will have black rings and I believe that Finland will have red rings.
Germany did have three letters before now so they probably do not have to change.
I do not think that there will be rings for specific nests as what happens when you get to AA9?
This new system was supposed to tidy things up but early indications are not good.
Well given that Glaslyn is RSPB run it is rather surprising they used the old system.
Surely having three characters (meaning they must be smaller) will make the rings harder to read. I was having this discussion with John Wright recently and he says that the German rings (that already have a similar system) are notoriously difficult to read in the field.

That same point had occured to me.
Although I think that the German system is different. I think the third character is not on the same line as the other two. I could be wrong about that though.
Yes, Tiger, I understand they have one large character the height of the ring with two smaller characters read at right angles to the first.
