Oh Dear !!!! June
Take care, i don't blame you for staying at home,
going back to your hail stone story reminded me of a storm we had a few years ago, it started off with a very heavy hail shower, very large hail stones came down & turned everything white like snow, it then turned to very heavy rain which could not go down the drains as they were blocked with hail, i was at work at the time & we stood there & watched as the water started rising, so 2 of us grabbed brooms & kicked off our shoes & paddled(walked) to the drains & swept them clear, we did manage to get rid of the water but the shops down the road got flooded, we were soaked to the skin by the time we finished but were happy we saved the shop.
sugarI think the Marsh Harrier business is a ruse to cover the controversy surrounding the Buzzards in Scotland !!
Sugar: not wishing to stir controversy further, but knowing the original source of the suggestion (I'm assuming here that you don't?), I don't feel that this is a fair accusation. I personally agree that buzzard is the overwhelmingly likely culprit, but I think it's only fair to make it clear that the person who suggested marsh harrier doesn't have any axes to grind as regards buzzards in Scotland. The suggestion came from one individual observer, and not, to the best of my knowledge, from any specific organisation or wider interest group.
I don't think it is appropriate to name the person concerned on a public forum as they were commenting in a personal capacity and some who didn't see the original comment would probably recognise the name, but it is someone who has worked in conservation for a number of years, knows both ospreys and marsh harriers, and has seen breeding ospreys react to a potentially predatory marsh harriers as well as to commoner intruders. So a credible witness as regards bird ID, BUT they are probably not familiar with the specific local habitat around Lochter and/ or what is or isn't likely to be present in that area.
When you're dealing with something as variable as a buzzard, and with such a fleeting view, what is 'likely' always has to come into the ID equation. From what I remember of the NE and its birdlife, buzzards are common, marsh harriers a decided rarity (and likely to remain so, since I don't think there is much, if any, suitable habitat for them). In my view, the odds are very, very high that it was a buzzard - but I'm not 100% certain about the Lochter area specifically, which is why I was interested in Keith's views.
I don't want this to turn into a prolonged debate - it is understandably an emotive issue for Keith in particular - so please can we drop this now, and I apologise for raising it in the first place. I would not have commented again if the reaction was not rather unfair to the person who suggested the alternative ID.
Mary I cannot keep up as too many posts today and will find your pic of Tire and yes spelt wrong but do not care lol. I think i might of been there but need to find the pic first.
June thank you for your view on rings and I think it maybe is easier but it does not stop all the other different kinds and maybe more confusing. I am a ring rememberer lol. I think it would be a good idea to identify but how many do we not know about?
I like a no and the year but so many different variations it is not easy lol
What concerns me and too many posts to read, I think you are having horrible weather and have tried to find the post. June or sugar can you help? I will go back again
sugar B&B I like your ring IDs but i'm sure there is a reason why not. June -- i'm glad you agree with me, Well done Federer, i knew he would do it , Yeah !!!

Only a thought but it irings are mixed up enough sugar and June :)
Why not simple and the new rings if stay the same would be good
I see there has been some interesting discussion re ringing codes while I've been out this evening - thank you, all.
It surely can't be coincidence that Loch Garten got 'AA' (as the original modern UK nest), but I don't see how they can use this beyond the next few seasons (only works up to the 9th chick - or 10th, since they didn't use AA0...) With over 200 pairs in Scotland now, it would be difficult to make a logical system work. Pity - I really like the idea!
Boomerang again, going after this LOL

Definitely switching off now - Night Night everyone, have a good sleep. Speak to you in the morning B&B
Mary GK I know B&B we are both softies when it comes to these chicks..... so will say no more. Have to say I am very happy as this afternoon after waiting for years, four little Goldfinches visited our garden feeder. There was two at first, then later on four appeared but it started to rain heavy and they flew off. Talking of Islands, when we were away we bought Rover tickets for the Ferries and managed to visit some of the Islands. Have to say my favourite was Isle of Tiree, also saw Isle of Coll and Isle of Colonsay on another day, went to Mull twice but did not get to see the Sea Eagles, looked for the Peregrines you told me about, but they were renovating the church on the main street in Tobermory, but noticed that behind it high on the hill was another tower, so think it would be the place they would probably be. Isle of Tiree
