Well another new month, an exciting month i hope ! with our young Ospreys building up their
strength ready for their long trip to Africa.
There is no getting away from it, this year has seen some good times & bad, so lets just enjoy these beautiful birds whilst we can.
Morning All
Another clear & dry morning on the nest,
The chicks woke up about 4.15 had a stretch & preen, Alba tried some wingcersing, they settled down to wait for breakfast,
Odin brought the 1st fish of the day at 6.55, not an overly big one, both chicks are having a nice quiet feed.
June--- i hope you don't mind me starting the July thread.
Breakfast all over & done with,
now we have the chicks quietly chatting away to each other or maybe they are asking EJ for more fish as she has just left the nest.
chicks are now settling down for a little snooze !!
The chicks are side by side, Alba sits up & starts to pull at Cally's backpack
as if to say " what the heck is this?" lol
Good mornig ALL - Sugar we must stop meeting early mornings.
Your last post with a bit of fortune maybe Alba will pull off Caledonia's contraption.
It is another fine day so will look forward to much "wingcersing" (I have to look at that word before I write it) - pleased they are well fed.
JUNE will not mind that someone else has started July for her and am sure will be very pleased - I have not seen her post yesterday so I hope is all fine - maybe sen an e mail if I do not hear today.
Now need to go and sort my records out - I can not recolect them like B & B does - start a new file for Alba/Caledonia and need to update Lochter, Tweed and Rutland before my wife also screams for her breakfast.
Good morning Sugar and Keith and everyone that is awake.
I am sure I saw Caledonia biting her aeriel yesterday and suprised she could get to it.
Yes a fine day and hope to see lots of "wingcersing" sugar :) lol
Morning all – thanks for updates Sugar.
B&B – I always laugh reading “up the wooden hill”. When I first started posting here I wondered what you were on about! It truly is a priceless expression:)
Keith - June posted Friday night really bad thunderstorm and had to cancel her plans. Wonder if she still has a connection? Hope all is well.
No tennis today but at least Murray is through. With Nadal out, maybe this is his year?
Hopefully plenty wingcersing today. As I’ve been watching, Alba has been lying down, quite content. EJ has been in and a moved a stick – yes, getting the runway prepared? Cally has been having a good look out there with some flaps and stretches in between and now settled down again with little sis.
I’m still sticking with July 4th – Independence Day.
Off to get breakfast - BFN
Good morning Karen, my mother used to say "Up the Wooden Hill" It is a Yorkshire saying but not sure if it is said anywhere else lol.
Karen I hope June is ok, we all do worry here about each other.
I think it will be Caledonia to fledge first but a very close call :)
I must go as will get nothing done sat here.
KarenI’m still sticking with July 4th – Independence Day.
B & B thought early also but noted that the weather may hinder an early fledge (Being cautious) - I will still go for next weekend but again it is very weather dependent - Good luck with 4/7.
I do not mind getting it wrong as long as all goes well - never got any of the returns correct in Tigers sweep but pleased to see some of the birds return (Unfortunately some never made it).
hello Karen - first time I've spoken to you 'cos I'm new - I grew up with 'wooden hill' expression too but haven't got one now - more like a crawl along the corridor!!!
My photos here (eventually)
Morning all. what a lovely sight--Cally and Alba laid out flat, facing each other heads together with beaks touching with a pillow of moss underneath--so cute.
Keith, I'm a little worried about June too, as Karen said she last blogged on Friday--nothing from her yesterday and which is unusual--of course it could well be connection problems but do hope all is well.
Thanks Keith also for those lovely shots of the Lochter nest--so sweet--at least the little one seems to have attentive parents so do so hope he/she will go on to fledge successfully.
B&B My mum and Dad used to say 'up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire' and we lived in Sussex.!
I predict 8th July for the first fledge--I'm always wrong with my predictions but only time will tell.
Oh dear, raining again and EJ flies in to help shield the youngsters.
As many of you are familiar with other nests I would appreciate your thoughts\knowledge:
It is all very nice watching just the one chick eg LOTL. There are no problems but sole chicks without siblings don’t learn pecking order, to push/fight for food, etc and I have been wondering if sole upbringing could have any affect on their development.
Also, somewhere, at the back of my brain, I heard that Roy Dennis is not keen to ring a single chick and if he does it is at his discretion whether he does so or not. Has there ever been a “single” chick rung/returned?
PS First time I’ve ever hear the saying “wooden hill” - thanks all.
Karen you have asked something I have thought a lot about but afraid to ask. "Now that's not like me" lol
I do wonder if it it too cosy for one chick but maybe it will make do difference as they have a wild instinct.
A good question has there ever been a "single" chick rung/returned? Surely there must be and hopefully you will get you answer as I am interested also.
Good morning Milly and WendyBarrter.
KarenHas there ever been a “single” chick rung/returned?
Well the answer to your first question is definitely YES. See this rather special osprey
Returned I will have to think about that.

hello B&B - am waiting for answers to your question too as I have much to learn!
