May I ask - Do you think all these sightings are two year olds making there way up north or do you think now there is a big push towards natural colonisation throughout England/Wales on the migratory routes. I am interested in your thoughts.
Keith : My personal opinion is that there are a lot of 2 year olds around because 2010 was an exceptionally good breeding season so there have been a higher number of returnees. It will be interesting to see what happens next year as 2011 was not as good a year and it looks like 2012 will be the same. I dont think ospreys are still arriving now just exploring and looking for a future nesting site or a good place to fish.
If it helps there have been a number of sightings around the Arlington area over the past couple of years and I'm sure this year they have been more frequent and regular. We always get passage birds in Sussex but usually they pass through quickly in Spring but sometimes hang around on the way out in the late Summer/Autumn. These birds, for two have been seen at Arlington, seem to be much more static and you will recall one, with a blue ring, is thought to be a 2010 bird from Rutland. Tim Mackrill is still trying to get a positive ID on it. The area has some dense woodland and the bird(s) having caught seem to head off in the same direction each time. Cause for some speculation I feel.
Mike: It does seem like there may be a pair at Arlington as they were both spotted fishing there one morning. The same ocurred last year at Ranworth broad in Norfolk and they put platforms up there but nothing has come of it this year. It is bound to happen eventually that new nests will spring up in different areas, just a matter of time.
