Good morning, here is our first sight of the chicks today when EJ has a quick bio-break. She has cleared out the spare eggshells that confused us, good girl!
Going to get a coffee.
If chick #3 hatches at night we may have better luck seeing it with the night camera . It is not as pixilated
EJ is sound asleep. i doubt much is happening under her right now
Thanks for starting the new thread, Scylla. Hi Barbara. I wonder if we'll see #3 in the wee small hours (always wondered why they call them that. I mean 3am is the same 60 minutes in length as 3pm) or in the early morning.
Ah! Just had a thought. Don't worry I'm fine ;-) Perhaps the reason why EJ keeps the egg shells next to the hatched chicks for a short while is that they act as some sort of comforter for them until they get fully used to the big world. don't know if it makes sense but it's just a thought :-)
Fleeting glimpse of egg:
EJ is doing some serious digging under her. By the way she shakes her head after each dig I think she is cleaning up "chick poo" LOL
Well EJ's doing a fair bit of scraping and one of the weans is very talkitive. Really wish I could speak Osprey. Perhaps one of the bobbleheads is saying: "Mum! That egg just talked" :-)
They don't produce nice easy "packets" of poo like some other birds ;-D
We cross posted, BARBARA (edit, and HERON), did you have a look at the egg above? I saw a hole - but I would, wouldn't I? ;-)
Paul I think you may have a point. More than one chick has slept their first night or two with their head back in the shell. Chick #2 did that last night or the night before .
scylla I just looked at the egg video. The glimpse is so brief I can't tell for certain. It may be a hole
I think first they poke a hole in the air pocket inside the fat end of the egg. Then chip through the egg on the fat end . I can't see if that is the fat end of the egg.
When you crack open a chicken egg you will see a membrane inside the fat end of the egg. That is the air pocket
Scylla. That does look a bit like a hole. Paused the vid, then had a good look. Can't be totally sure though but it did recall a hole.

I know that, Barbara :o *mortally wounded* and I always store my eggs the right way up, which is more than can be said for some egg-packers ;-D
EJ is head-up, looking around now, tasting something imaginary, drooping, settling down.
Heron77it did recall a hole.
But very likely a blotch or piece of dirt :-/ Never mind, we must have something to study and speculate over, the night is long and can be barren :-)
I just ordered a free Kindle book and Amazon said I'd already bought it, and they're right :o I'm saving them for a rainy day, no chance of reading for the foreseeable future.
I hope EJ needs a nature break soon and we can look at it more closely :)
