  • Photo: Arctic Tern

Arctic Terns have made a long journey to make it up to the reserve - and what fantastic birds they are. Most of ours nest on the islands on the Loch, with up to 400 pairs in recent years.
  • Photo: Better for the terns

The shelters have gone out on the island - we're ready for the breeding season. The birds don't nest in these shelters, but the chicks (particularly the Common Terns) use them to hide from predators and the worst of the weather.
  • Photo: Bittern

Avril Taylor and T.Keith Bruce were enjoying the views from Fen Hide when this Bittern flew across the reeds to the left of them. Keith is a fantastic wildlife photographer and had his camera with him (as always!) so was able to quickly grab this record shot of the bird through the hide window before...

  • Photo: Collared goose

This is 'TDL' - a Pink-footed Goose with a uniquely marked collar enabling it to be identified in the field. This picture was taken at the south end of the Loch in Feb 2009. If you've got a telescope, or a good camera, check carefully through the goose flocks for collars and let us...
  • Photo: Common Terns nesting

This shows the difference in the state of the Tern nests - compare the large chicks with the birds still on eggs (there are a couple of eggs on the picture if you look carefully).
  • Photo: Cormorants

This year the islands in front of Bay Hide (the Croft Islands) have had a new addition in the form of a small colony of Cormorants that has settled there. These amazing birds are well worth a look - their very ugly chicks should be visible soon!
  • Photo: Corn Buntings (lots!)

We've got at least 200 Corn Buntings on the reserve at the moment, most of them are feeding along the path to Tower Pool hide, but a lot of them are also regularly coming into the grain put down by the car park. This excellent picture was taken by Alan Sinclair on the Tower Pool path and gives a...
  • Photo: Cuckoo Flower

There's a wonderful display of Cuckoo flowers along the entrance track at the moment. Could anyone tell me where they get their name from?
  • Photo: Fat Bird of the Barley

The hard weather has brought in stacks of farmland birds to any areas where they can find food, these two were part of a flock of 30+ Corn Buntings in the field at the south end of the Loch (next to St Mary's Kirk) and others have also been seen amongst big flocks of Yellowhammers and Reed Buntings...
  • Photo: Fat Bird of the Barley

If you've never seen a Corn Bunting before, now is the time to visit the reserve. This is a close up of one on the path to Tower Pool Hide (photo by Alan Sinclair). If you wait in the car park on arrival, a large group regularly lands in the tree tops before coming down to feed on grain.
  • Photo: Great Crested Grebe Strathbeg south

Taken from the south side of the loch with the lens at its max (500mm) not the best as the reeds were interfering with the auto focus.
  • Photo: Hen Harrier ringtail

Another cracking photo from Alan Sinclair - taken from Fen Hide on 2nd March 2010
  • Photo: Long-billed Dowitcher

OK, so not actually on the reserve, but this Dowitcher (probably a Long-billed) was found at Rattray Head, which isn't far away. It was flightly and was last seen heading off towards the beach with 13 Redshank at about half one. Hopefully it will get refound - preferably on the reserve! It's...
  • Photo: Male Sparrowhawk

Seen from the Tower Pond Hide flying low and fast from South to North.
  • Photo: Noisy neighbours

This Common Tern doesn't look too impressed by the throng of young Black-headed Gulls lurking around its nest. In fairness to the gulls, one of them is dead, so it can't really hang around anywhere else - life in a seabird colony can be a busy, smelly, crowded and sometimes a slightly unpleasant...
  • Photo: Osprey

A clearer view of the underside of one of the pair of Ospreys seen over the Tower Pond.
  • Photo: Otter Spotter

Honest, there is an otter in there. No fancy camera, no digi-scoping, just a hand held snappy digital and a fantastic chance encounter this morning. After lolling on the bank, swimming about a bit, catching a fish (I could hear it crunching it!) and then swimming about some more, it came onto the bank...
  • Photo: Pair of Ospreys

The pair of Ospreys seen displaying over the Tower Pond from the Hide.
  • Photo: Pinkfeet leaving the roost, December 09

Just a few of the 37,000 present on 13th December.... cold and frosty morning, most of them departing west over the airfield and Visitor Centre.
  • Photo: Ralf

OK, so it's a rubbish photo; I was shivering in the very cold morning and my tripod is 13 years old and falling to bits so it isn't easy to hold the camera steady, but it hopefully gives an idea of how well 'Ralf' was showing this morning. He had just swooped at a crow to make it drop...

Another great photo from Alan Sinclair
