Recent Sightings - 8-22 May 2013
Agnieszka Magierecka
It’s been a fairly nice couple of weeks with a good deal of sunshine and some really warm days. The warm spell has made a real difference to the appearance of the reserve – it’s getting very green and there are lots of wildflowers in bloom. If you look closely, you may notice that the...

What an exciting time at Lochwinnoch! It looks like spring has finally arrived and the whole reserve is getting greener and greener with every day. Birds are singing aloud all over the trails and you may see them displaying and collecting nest material. There’s an increasing number of butterflies...

Recent Sightings - 14-25 April 2013

After a seemingly endless winter we all long for a proper spring to finally come. Unfortunately, the weather can’t make up its mind and keeps alternating spells of bright sunshine with the wintry showers. However, there is a little light of hope as the spring migrants start to arrive and the reserve...

Recent Sightings - 26 March-13 April 2013

It’s been a while since our last blog update and a lot has happened in the meantime. The works on the Aird Meadow are now completed and three new channels are slowly being colonised by wildlife. Mallards , greylag geese and mute swans were all seen in the area, as well as a lapwing , a moorhen...

The weather in Renfrewshire has been very changeable recently. In the past week or so, we had clear blue skies and heavy grey clouds, rain and sunshine, strong wind, most beautiful rainbows, and even some morning frost. Some trees along the Aird Meadow Trail have already turned fiery orange. Some swallow...

It’s that time of the year again: the season of new arrivals! Migrants have come back from their winter holidays in Africa and southern Europe and, the breeding season being well underway, chicks have started to appear at the reserve! The reserve is home to many breeding birds with 48 breeding...

An exciting week of birds
Paula Baker
Our period of interesting bird sightings has continued this week. The juvenile black terns (see image below) that were feeding between the Aird Meadow and Castle Semple loch have continued to do so, dropping down to just one for the past few days, but still very active and providing good views for our...

Yet more ospreys!

Some fantastic views of osprey on the reserve today, starting at around 9.30am, a bird was fishing over the Aird Meadow, had three diving attempts but didn't manage to catch any breakfast, It was back again by 10.30 and then again at 11am, but didn't seem to have any luck with its catching today...

Hopping mad!
Paula Baker
Hi all, We've had lots of frog and toad activity this week due to the damp weather. On my way in to work on Friday, it was pouring with rain so I was mostly looking at the ground anyway but suddenly noticed that the ground seemed to be moving! Lo and behold there were lots and lots of tiny froglets...
