ERECTION OF 2 NOS. WIND TURBINES (27.05M TO BLADE TIP) ASSOCIATED METER HOUSE AND ACCESS TRACK - LAND ADJACENT TO EAST PRESTON AND SOLWAY LINKS GOLF COURSE, SOUTHERNESS, DUMFRIES

Although we are supportive of renewable energy in general because of the need to combat climate change, individual developments must be sited to avoid harm to birds and other wildlife.  RSPB Scotland is extremely concerned by the application to site two 27m (100 foot) wind turbines at East Preston, due to the importance of the area for wintering barnacle and pink-footed geese, which regularly feed and flight in this area in large concentrations.  These turbines are relatively small but because of the sensitivity of the site, they could be harmful and a detailed assessment of their likely environmental impacts will be required.  We will be writing to D&G Council to object to this proposal unless it can be shown that it would not be harmful to the populations of geese, which are qualifying interests of the Upper Solway Flats & Marshes Special Protection Area.  We would encourage others to express their own concern if they feel strongly about the risk of collision and/or displacement of geese if the proposal went ahead.
