I guess Alsveryhappy now. I would be too :)
Cracking shot ... I tried finding the one at Slimbridge a couple of weeks back .. in amongst the Tufties it's impossible for this relative newbie birder! ;o)
Actually Ant its not to hard, the hard part is the difference between Lesser and Greater Scaup, but you will soon find the difference :-) :-)
If I recall the one at Slimbridge is a female, if so, they are difficult unless you have Greater Scaup females to compare with, and they're not that common themselves
Your right Nigel females are another kettle of fish, but would we enjoy birding so much if it was all easy :- :-)
Definitely would be a less attractive Hobby (obsession ;) ), if they were all easy to ID, and spring is coming with all those lovely warblers :)
Great pic, lovely bird :)
With male Lesser Scaup, probably the biggest confusion risk is a male Tufted Duck x Pochard hybrid like this one: http://www.gobirding.eu/Images/Ducks/Hybrids/Pochard%20x%20Tufted%20Duck,%20Swanton%20Morley,%2027-Dec-08%20%28A8%29%20L.JPG. The size of the black 'nail' on the bill is a good feature to check (should be small for Lesser Scaup).
