Lesser Scaup at Cosmeston

  • I guess Alsveryhappy now.  I would be too :)

  • :-) :-)

  • Cracking shot ... I tried finding the one at Slimbridge a couple of weeks back .. in amongst the Tufties it's impossible for this relative newbie birder! ;o)

    Ant

  • Actually Ant its not to hard, the hard part is the difference between Lesser and Greater Scaup, but you will soon find the difference :-) :-)

  • If I recall the one at Slimbridge is a female, if so, they are difficult unless you have Greater Scaup females to compare with, and they're not that common themselves

  • Your right Nigel females are another kettle of fish, but would we enjoy birding so much if it was all easy :- :-)

  • Definitely would be a less attractive Hobby (obsession ;) ), if they were all easy to ID, and spring is coming with all those lovely warblers :)

  • Great pic, lovely bird :)

With male Lesser Scaup, probably the biggest confusion risk is a male Tufted Duck x Pochard hybrid like this one: http://www.gobirding.eu/Images/Ducks/Hybrids/Pochard%20x%20Tufted%20Duck,%20Swanton%20Morley,%2027-Dec-08%20%28A8%29%20L.JPG. The size of the black 'nail' on the bill is a good feature to check (should be small for Lesser Scaup).
