Nigel I've definitely got a shot of a Spanish Sparrow, from the same place that I saw the Nightingale and Cett's, but will have another look at the ones I thought were House Sparrows just in case.

Doh! Of course thy are, unmistakeable (except by me) upturned rather than orange root vegetable conk! That'll larn me to be more careful - just glanced and made an assumption based on the two oystercatchers that have made their home in the reed bed. Great to see so many Avocets back (someone from GOS counted 50!) thought numbers would be well down after the predation of chicks last year but this seems better than ever!

Yay! They've fledged!!!!

The Little Owl can be very obliging can't he. I was pointing him out to two brothers who visited on Friday .. he was tucked right in the tree and almost impossible to see. If you didn't know it was a regular spot for them you would have walked on by!

Lol! I have a very long list of "just missed's" ;O)

Loads of Sedge and Cetti Warblers down by the burnt reed bed .. the pop bottles should be nesting again now ... Nigel will give us an update hopefully! ;o)

Excellnt John, we get them all the time on my feeders here in Cardiff ( i wish ) seen them in France a number of times but only singletons, Very nice pics M8 PS who are you calling Dumbo :-)

Here’s the recent sightings from last week. 69 bird species and 2 others!

Avocet, Bearded tit, Black tailed godwit, Blackbird, Blackcap, Blue tit, Bullfinch, Canada goose + 6 goslings, Cetti's warbler, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Coot, Cormorant, Cuckoo, Curlew, Dunlin, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Grasshopper warbler, Great crested grebe, Great spotted woodpecker, Great tit, Greenfinch, Grey heron, Hobby, House martin, House sparrow, Jay, Kestrel, Kingfisher, Lapwing, Lesser whitethroat, Linnet, Little egret, Little grebe, Little owl, Little ringed plover, Long tailed tit, Magpie, Mallard, Marsh harrier, Marsh warbler (unconfirmed!), Meadow pipit, Moorhen, Mute swan + 6 cygnets, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Pied wagtail, Pintail, Pochard, Raven, Red breasted merganser, Redstart, Reed bunting, Reed warbler, Ringed plover, Robin, Sedge warbler, Shelduck, Shoveler, Starling, Swallow, Swift, Tufted duck, Wheatear, Whimbrel, Whitethroat, Wren, Yellowhammer.

Also: toad, grass snake.

We’ve had some new arrivals on the reserve in the last few days! There are both avocet and lapwing chicks down at Goldcliff, easy to see from the hides. The Canada geese have hatched 6 fluffy little bundles of joy, and they spent yesterday wandering around the environs and showing off in front of the visitor centre. So cute!

We’re eagerly awaiting the cygnets from the mute swan which has been nesting right by the visitor centre. They should hatch any day now, so we’re keeping a keen eye on the nest. It’s easy to see from the shop so come and have a look – maybe you’ll be lucky enough to see the eggs hatch! Expect an update here as soon as the cygnets appear.

Have you had any new arrivals in your gardens? Are you expecting some soon?

Answering my own question ( a bit sad) they are behind the Water Treatment works so may be some natural filtration system before allowing run off to the Usk.
