Getting louder

It may not be sunny or overly warm but the Marsh Frogs have been in fine form with some great orchestral overtures from the main channels. Brenda caught up with this particular male last week. Definitely the biggest air sacks we have ever seen! 9-6-13

Are they getting bigger?

Our Marsh Frogs have always been a little on the large side and Richard Duhrsen captured this battle between a Grey Heron and Frog.... Click here to view.... A a fine shot of a Heron eyeing up dinner by Basil Thornton... 27-5-13

No quarter
Howard Vaughan
Now that the Marsh Frogs are going full tilt out on the reserve it is not really surprising that they are getting picked off by a variety of predators. There they sit busily belching out the froggy mating blues when, whoosh, they are airborne and winging their way to a nearby nest to fed to hungry...

Croaking at last
Howard Vaughan
On Wednesday a family reporting seeing a couple of Marsh Frogs . These were the first sightings this year but it took until yesterday for them to start croaking although it was a little half hearted and lacking gusto. They seem to all start out dark brown a 'green up' as the season goes one....

Gotcha!
Howard Vaughan
It may be late November but with mild conditions there are still marsh frogs to be had out there and the Grey Herons have been finding some of the more sluggish ones in the last few days. Martin Burke saw this adult spear this enormous mega-frog on Sunday. A real whopper! Definitely enough to feed...

Now will you believe me!

I know that I have talked about MEGA-FROGS at Rainham before but we have never had an image of one. Even allowing for the beast inflating itself, this whopping great amphibian almost seems too heavy for the heron to lift let alone dispatch! It's legs are thicker that the legs of the heron and...

Hardly hear yourself think!

Despite an very chilly start, the Marsh Frogs eventually got going and could be heard all around the trail and even from inside the shop and office! The first Grass Snake of the year was seen on Friday so with warmer longer days to come it will not be too long before the battle of reptiles 'v'...

Spring for a day
Howard Vaughan
With temperatures topping 16c here yesterday it was not surprising that the marsh was alive with bird song with Skylarks climbing high into the blue, Reed Buntings signing from the reed tops and every species in the woodland giving it large! Common Frogs were seen in the Wildlife Garden Pond and the...

Mega Frog??
Howard Vaughan
Over the last few years we have seen some truly enormous Marsh Frogs out on the marsh and these brutes tend to 'feel' different to the more usual ones we come across. They are often much broader across the back that the normal ones, with less pointed snouts and a distinctively upright posture...

At the pond.....

Just spent five minutes talking to visitors around the wildlife pond with dozens of Buff-tailed and Carder Bumblebees buzzaing around us when this rather worn Comma came to visit and landed on the outstretched finger of a very appreciative Elsie Peto! She even had a butterfly on her t-shirt! Comma...

The migrant gates are open!

Today saw the arrival of yet another amazing bird with a ridiculouly leggy Black-winged Stilt elegantly strutting around on the pools infront of the centre all day. This rare visitor from the Med certainly brightened up our day. It had spent the previous day on the Isle of Wight before touching down...
