  • Blog post: Flaming Canary

Last year I managed to capture the special moment when the rising sun hit the glass edifices that are Canary Wharf when it went from dull monochrome to blazing brightness in the blink of an eye. I had not seen it before or since (even the following morning!) but today it happened again as I stepped outside...
  • Blog post: Big skies again

Yesterday was tempestuous once again with huge anvil storm clouds brewing across the river to the south and rain driving in from the east. It did not last all day and the sun made a concerted effort to push on through. Bird wise there was another Arctic Skua on the river and two Pectoral Sandpipers were...
  • Blog post: Not just birds...

The huge skies of Rainham Marshes are home to other magical things other than bird, insects and the occasional impressive old plane... On the 8th September I captured these two almost perfectly triangular clouds as they appeared to be hovering in some sort of alien invasion holding pattern over the...

  • Blog post: Have a good one.....!

Been a busy day here with lots of visitors and plenty of last minute shopping and cake eating! Bearded Tits showed well again today and the Lapwings have been shimmering in the afternoon sun. Twelve Kittiwakes up river behind the Sand Fulmar dredger would have been notable though if they had got past...
  • Blog post: Weird Skies

A very strange afternoon here on the reserve with peculiar curtain-like cloud hanging beneath the rest of the bobbly cloud base and drifting east up the river.
  • Blog post: Sundown

And yes I could probably post a different sunset picture every day but I have to restrain myself.
  • Blog post: Missed it!

The moon rose huge in the east but too low for us to see any of the partial eclipse and has now disappeared into the clouds!. The sunset however was a fabulous shocking pink herring-bone pattern. Fords above the Butts at dusk
  • Blog post: Cracking skies again...

The last two evenings have seen some wonderful skies over the reserve and Thames. Had to go round and lock up tonight and was lucky enough to see a Short-eared Owl liesurely hunting around my head near the Butts Hide! Magic! First three by me, last by Brenda
