Butterflies galore

Butterflies galore

Hi everyone,

Just spotted this picture of a beautiful peacock butterfly on Saltholme's facebook page.  It was taken by Louise Gibbon.

I keep saying it, but I'll say it again ... now is a wonderful time for butterflies at Saltholme.  But be quick - once they've laid their eggs, they'll soon be gone.

You'll remember from my very grainy photograph that I spotted my first small copper butterfly at the weekend.  As well as that, we've had orange tips, speckled woods, wall browns, small tortoiseshells and, I think, some common blues.

Warm, sunny days with no wind are the best, but all of these butterflies can pop up just about anytime and anywhere at Saltholme.

Oh, and if you want to learn more about growing nettles for butterflies, be sure to join in with Be Nice to Nettles weekend on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May.  Check out the events page for all the details.

Bye for now,

Ben.
