It is the middle of Summer (but does not quite feel like it), so time for the annual shearing of our Shetland sheep. This weekend Dave and Emma will be demontrating the art of shearing and you will be able to get very close to the action.
The sheep have been growing the wool for the last year, all the time eating our grass to keep it just the right length. We shear the ewes but not this years lambs. It must feel very good to get the winter coat off at last!
So what can be done with the wool? If you call in at the Visitor Centre this weekend you can see the Durham Guild of Spinners Weavers and Dyers (www.durhamguild.co.uk) spinning some of the fleece. You can also see some finished items that they have made earlier. They will be pleased to talk to you.
It is always good to watch these skills.
If you look on Saltholme Youtube, or the next blog, you can see Toby's video of the shearing.
