International Dawn Chorus Day - 5th May
Leila
My alarm goes off at 4am. I desperately want to turn it off. Then suddenly I remember why it's set so early. I can already hear the twitter and chatter of birds waking up outside and I start to get excited. This morning I'm getting up and getting out to listen to one of the most amazing sounds...

Spring has Sprung across the South Essex Marshes
Leila
Spring has well and truly sprung across our reserves with lots of wildlife to see and hear. As the summer migrants arrive, the reedbed at Vange Marsh is starting to come alive with Reed warblers, while Swallows, Sand martins and House martins all swoop over the main lagoon catching insects. Reed...

We thought the Winter was never going to end!
Leila
We thought the Winter was never going to end!...However, we are a ‘glass half full’ type of team at the South Essex Marshes and there has been an upside to all the cold wet weather this winter; it has allowed us for the first time to achieve maximum water levels across much of the Marshes...

We've had some frog spawn spotted in our wildlife pond at Wat Tyler...

Is your thing being outdoors, getting muddy and working up a sweat? Then our Thursday Work Party could be just the thing. Each Thursday our Wardens...

Skipper Challenge
Alan Shearman
You can find them right across South Essex Marshes. They look like tiny orange moths fluttering in and out of the grass but they are in fact energetic and fiercely territorial butterflies with attitude. Hopefully this little guide will help you out! Thanks to Howard Vaughan for this excellent image...

An Islandic black-tailed godwit tracked!
Alan Shearman
The importance of bird-ringing, we have known for a long time that many of our black-tailed godwits in the Greater Thames Estuary originate from Iceland. One such bird was seen in the creek, here at Wat Tyler on March 1st this year. The bird was rung 'RW-GO' and from that ring the following information...

Thames airport proposal

Dear David The world of politics moves fast. One minute you’re playing badminton in your suit, the next you are making decisions that impact on generations as yet unborn. No wonder you politicians don’t always get it right. In recent weeks, the government has upset pasty eaters, drivers...
