It's a rainy day here at The Lodge but our volunteers are still working away outside. We have put up a marquee to keep them and their equipment  dry while they start cutting wood ready for our 'Make a nest box 'event, on February 12th.We have given our regular Wednesday volunteer,David, a day off ! as he normally greets all of our visitors in the information hut- it's not the best day for that today!

Our flocks of redpolls are being seen all around the reserve, experienced birders are spotting mealy repolls amongst them and the much rarer Cous's arctic redpoll was identified by Steve Blain, the Beds County Bird recorder and his colleagues from the Lodge. It hasn't been reported since last week however, but it is a very difficult bird to confirm. Waxwings were around Jacks Pond on the heath on Sunday and are being seen around Sandy as well, so you still have a chance of  seeing these popular birds if you are visiting the area.
