Spring migrants seem to be slow to arrive this year, but a splendid male wheatear was spotted on the Sandy Ridge meadow yesterday and was perhaps a sign that birds are on the way through now. There are lots of chiffchaffs on the reserve, a couple of blackcaps singing their sweet songs and a couple of swallows were seen on the reserve boundary over Biggleswade Common today- but we are still awaiting the first willow warblers. Maybe they will arrive over the Easter weekend, although the cold northerly winds forecast may put the brakes on migrating birds for a bit longer yet?
