This male black-tailed skimmer was hanging out on the steps into the swimming pool. These dragonflies like to rest on the ground when it's warm and sunny.

The old swimming pool is a fantastic place to watch dragonflies and damselflies (plus moorhens, the fishing crows and even a kingfisher if you've very lucky!)

The emperor is just about the UK's biggest species of dragonfly. They spend most of their time zooming around, chasing everything else away. But this female needed to lay her eggs, and she chose to land right in front of me to do it!

The one that got away. I've spent hours and hours at the swimming pool, but getting any sort of photo of a dragonfly while it's flying is amazingly difficult. Better keep trying!
