  • Blog post: Monday's Magic Moment: Deer at dusk

This photo of a red deer hind at dusk, by Danny Green, is so simple, yet so striking. And I love the fact that, if you look really hard, you can even see her eyelashes! Now is a great time to watch deer, as they are just starting their autmn rut, where males strut their stuff to win the hearts...
  • Photo: "This is my best side"

Taken on 2nd October 2011. This stag was moving slowly through the woods parallel to the boardwalk. He stopped from time to time to 'pose' for me. This image seemed to capture his character better than any of the other shots.
  • Photo: "Come on, Mum"

Taken on 2nd October 2011. This calf was a little more concerned about my presence than was its mother (grazing alongside).
  • Photo: 2011 Model

  • Forum post: Re: Any ideas what animal this hair belongs to? Also scat pictures.

If you look closely at the hair you will see that it has a crinkled appearance throughout its length which i believe indicates that it belongs to a deer. Agree that the droppings look like a deer as well, no i-deer about the species though. Useful link on deer signs here and here .
  • Forum post: Bittern Protection

I would like to ask for some information regarding the protection of the Bittern. I live in the south of Wigan near to junction 25 of the M6. • Blog post: A little bit of Christmas Cheer

Today is a beautiful day up at Bempton. Unfortunately, the visitor centre is closed, as we have decided that the road is a little too dangerous to drive (or skid) down. You can still reach the reserve by foot however, and if you do, you won't be disappointed. The crisp, fresh, sparkling snow and...

Hi there Heard about this article in today's news. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-11624253 I felt sad for the animal involved. The shooting was legal but why on earth shot a stag in the middle of the rutting season, and for what reason! So unnecessary, and sad...

  • Blog post: Insects are all around us...

A few very warm days this week and the reserve is humming with life - butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, crickets, hoverflies, bugs, beetles and innumerable other beasties can be encountered around the trail. The two photos that I posted on the gallery today are of a short-cloaked moth, a tiny but...
  • Blog post: By Dawn's Early Light

It was a slightly bleary eyed group that met in the car park at 5 in the monrning on Sunday. We were all here to experience one of the best natural spectacles in Britain, the dawn chorus in an English woodland. The group was still yawning but excited to be out and about, with the sound of birdsong all...
  • Photo: 2381

How lovely and breath-taking it is to see a 2 or 3 deer leap across a field of corn or through the shadowy woods. How gracefully they fade into the distance while we continue our country walk.
  • Photo: 2196

The deer did not have to pause. It did not have to turn. I just thanked my lucky stars that it did.
  • Photo: 2162

After three hours sat still, waiting, aching, wondering when they'd come he silently slipped directly in front of me. I forgot the passage of time with the wonder and joy. Three hours in the making, a lifetime in the memory. Amazing!
