Bittern flyover
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, The chilly weather has brought some of Saltholme's shyest wildlife out into the open. Over the weekend, visitors have been lucky enough to see not one but two bitterns. This one was photographed by Chris Furphy and shared on the Saltholme facebook page . Visit the RSPB projects...

Reed all about it!
Peter Langham
Hi, Reedbeds are wonderful places for wildlife, but it's a habitat that isn't that common. So, we have been stepping up over the last couple of weeks by planting more reeds around the main lake. The sun shone on us on Tuesday as the photo of Alice and Dan, two of Saltholme's volunteers...

Waiting for bitterns
Toby Collett
There's still a bittern about at Saltholme . Bitterns are naturally shy and retiring. If you ever wanted to know how rewarding it can be to see something after waiting for hours to see it, then this is the bird to do it with. It can go missing for hours and then extend its long neck like a periscope...

A quick bittern
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, We've had a bittern at Saltholme today - though it's only been popping out into the open for very brief stints. One of the longest views lasted for a grandiose 15 seconds. The star-spangled visitor was creeping among the vegetation along the edges of the pool in front of the...

It's still winter ...
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, We're still in the grip of winter at Saltholme. Last time I blogged, I was hoping that some of the ducks, geese and swans would make their way back to Saltholme, but most of the ponds and lakes are still frozen. At the moment, it's still the tough (they told me to say that) mallards...

New Year wildlife at Saltholme
Ben Calvert
Happy New Year everyone, What better way to start the New Year than with a picture of a bittern at Saltholme? There's been a big thaw since I last blogged just after Christmas. Now's a great time to get closer to some of Saltholme's winter wildlife treats (like bitterns and water...

Saltholme's winter wildlife moments
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, There've been so many amazing moments at Saltholme over the past two days, I don't quite know where to start. The long-eared owls still provide lots of excitement. There were plenty of beaming faces - complete rosy cheeks - around the visitor centre today. Toby managed to record...

It's better in December
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, Well, I think December's good but the snow continues. As you'll probably have read Saltholme is currently closed . Keep up to date with the blog, facebook and twitter to find out if we're open tomorrow. The paths are patterned by the footprints left by foxes, brown hares...

Saltholme is open...
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, Yet another short one from me to let you all know that Saltholme is open again. There's still plenty of snow around the reserve if you want to marvel in the wintry atmosphere. It's great for photographs too. There's also been a bittern sighted in the north west reedbed...
