Beating About the Bush
Peter Langham
Bushes can be great for wildlife, and the Long-Eared Owls like them for roosting in the Haverton scrub as Adam pointed out in the last blog entry. But for the rest of the Reserve we need grass, lots of uninterrupted, wet grass, great for nesting waders. Here bushes and trees just give predators places...

High-rise Renovation
Peter Langham
The Sand Martins have long since left for Africa where there are lots of insects to let them fatten up before returning to breed. This gives us time to renovate their high-rise nest site . We have cleared the weed from the pool in front of the bank to give clear water and now is time to work on the structure...

Toad in the Hole
Peter Langham
The theme for the season is 'Time for Bed . Today we have started to work on the Wildlife Garden where some areas need attention to prepare for the winter sleep. We aim to do the minimum at this time of year to let wildlife have places to shelter over winter but some plants have outgrown their space...

Phoenix at Saltholme
Peter Langham
As well as the Hallowe'en festivities this week end, Saltholme hosted the annual RSPB Phoenix conference. The Phoenix groups are the teen-age members of the RSPB and we have a very active one here (more information from amanda.martin@rspb.org.uk ). They were from all over the country and assembled...

Improving vision in the fog
Peter Langham
It was quite foggy today, not the best for viewing wildlife. But it gave the estate team the perfect opportunity to improve the vision of Bottom Tank from Phil Stead Hide. Eventually, if left alone, the plants will choke the water and the wetland will become dry - not so good for waders. Today we...

Shrewd character
Peter Langham
Yesterday, as Adam has already blogged, we were putting up a fence when Ed and Chris found a shrew just where a fence post was to go. Luckily they caught it and we were able to move it to some long grass close by where we were not working. But it was a quick mover and ran up Ed's arm. ...

Weekend recap - hogitats and more!
Stephen Vincent
Ok, I’ll hold my hands up, our simple hogitats weren’t nearly as aesthetically pleasing as the ones available in our shop (above), but they are effective :-) We enjoyed a fantastic weekend making hedgehog habitats; plenty of families turned up to take advantage of our Time For Bed family...

Hibernation & hedgehogs
Stephen Vincent
Yes that's a frog not a hedgehog, but our hibernation trail doesn't discriminate! We have information and picture cut-outs dotted around the discovery zone - did you know that pond skaters hibernate? This weekend we continue our 'Time for Bed' theme, and in addition to our hibernation...

And a repast for redwings
Peter Langham
The finches are feeding on the rose hips in the Wildlife Garden and are easy to see by the Visitor Centre. In the October Predictions blog Adam said the winter thrushes would be on their way. As we were busy repairing a fence yesterday he saw them fly past (then alerted by a call he pointed out a...
