It's still a bit of a white out here at the Lodge although the roads are clear, the paths are still a bit of a challenge! A couple of shots from earlier in the week.

Pipistrelles and Foxes.
Birdie Wild
Last year, knowingly, for the first time in my life, I saw Bats, Common Pipistrelles, ( could have been Sopranos, but more likely Common) ). I was stood in my garden at dusk, ( I feed and talk to the foxes) , when something flew between me and the tree I was standing next to , I knew immediately it wasn't...

This rather lovely specimen was hunting something in the grass and keep leaping up and pouncing. Looks rather more thoughtful though in this pose.

Adrienne, who's one of Saltholme's hide guides, shared this great story with me earlier in the week ... We were sitting in the cafe on afternoon. I am not sure if it was late November or December, but it was just after the work had been done to remove the reeds in from of the sand martin bank...

Halloween and the phonelines have gone batty!
IanH
Some spooky goings on in the wildlife enquiries team today with a series of calls about bats. Some turning up in peoples houses and others wanting to know more about them and how to encourage them. Most bats are going to be looking for safe places to hibernate over the cold winter months over the next...

Read on to find the answer to this often asked question. Guest blog by Lisa Robinson, Intern Visitor Officer The red deer rut is over! Well, it is as far as staffing the viewpoint is concerned, though there is still some bellowing in the mornings, so it might still be worth a wander up to the viewpoint...

Time for a stag party?

No, I'm not talking about boozy nights out for the boys before they get married. I mean something filled with far more testosterone than than juvenile pranks can muster. Something that really separates the men from the boys, the haves from the have nots. Something to really the girls talking and...

Autumn colours

The north brooks this morning looked like autumn with a small flock of rusty-brown wigeon (nearly 50) and a variety of waders - a few black-tailed godwits, dunlins, ruff, snipe and many lapwing. Sadly, no sign of yesterday's curlew sandpipers. There was also this splendid fox sitting in the sunshine...

A really nice adult male fox trotted by the office windows this morning. He had a good look at us looking at him, marked his territory on the field boundary outside and then moved on. Of course no one had a camera handy to record this event!

Cool. Here's one from my garden over Christmas. Foxes at night round here are not uncommon. However this is the first time I've seen one during the day (and I've lived here 14 years). I actually had two sitings. One at about 3pm ish and another a few days later at around 9.30am. |'m...

One Feb.evening I opened the door of our motorhome and saw two green lights under the tree about six foot away from me. The lights were the eyes of a lovely red fox staring straight at me he sat listening while I spoke softly to him for some minutes.

After hours of patience, the moment when a wild fox gently took a piece of chicken from my outstretched hand was unforgettable. I felt very humble to have breached a gulf between human and animal.
