  • Forum post: Hello fellow twitchers

Dear community, I have recently joined and am another twitcher too. My favourites are the Goldfinches, hence fourteen, which, last year I managed to attract into my bird service station in one sitting, it was a personal best for me, having had regular large visitor numbers from the guys in red, white...
  • Forum post: The best thing about ......

The snow : Is going in to the garden and seeing all the bird and animal prints in it the next morning and trying to figure out what they are and following them to see what they've been up to !! then photographing them and searching through books at bird and animal footprints and trying to identify...
  • Blog post: A smashing idea

The theme of nature detectives was continued with the discovery of this scene. A hard stone and lots of broken snail shells . . . . . . there's only one thing it can be: a thrush's anvil. Snails are at the top of the menu for song thrushes , but to get to the juicy part they must smash...
  • Forum post: Re: ROBINS

Hi Vivvy, not only do they hang on bird feeders.. they will also eat on the hover! I've managed to get some high speed video of the one in our garden doing this, one of the best below. I've got more videos of this robin and other birds on my youtube page if your interested...
  • Forum post: RSPB Classic seed feeder and guardian

Hi Guys, I have bought a "classic seed feeder" and its associated clear plastic dish and I seem to have a problem with it.... it may be a coincidence but after installing it in the same place where an older bird feeder was, the numbers of birds visiting the same place has dropped. I did...
  • Forum post: Mutually exclusive birds at birdfeeder

I've had the pleasure of a mixed flock of blue, great and coal tits on the birdfeeder for most of the winter. However for the last few days they appear to have gone missing leaving a "hole" in my usual great Birdwatch count. They have been replaced by a flock of siskins. There are a number...
  • Forum post: lack of wild bird sightings

We also live facing open farmed countryside . We thought that when moving here 5 years ago the area would provide us with views of many wild birds, but this has proved to be the opposite. In the city of Nottingham the gardens have wild birds, foxes and even squirrels. Here we don't see any sparrows...
  • Blog post: (Not all that) Big Garden Birdwatch'ed

So, it was the annual Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend, and today was the day we took part at Top Lodge. Many thanks to all those who came into the Little Barn and lent a hand spotting birds. Hope you all had fun. We had a total of 13 species seen. In decreasing numbers they were: 14 jackdaws...
  • Forum post: My first BGBW in my garden in Essex

Have seen greenfinches in the past and at times we have many collared doves sitting on top of the pergola over the pond (sometimes mating). Do at times get quite a lot of sparrows too but this was what I recorded today 29th January 2012 between 11.30am and 12.30pm Blackbirds 2 Starlings 12 Woodpigeon...
  • Forum post: Re: Is it cheating?

My garden isn't at the back of my house, it is over a yard/drive and round a corner, so I have to actually be in it to count. What's more the garden is big so I can only see so much of it at anyone time, so when I sit further down the one end, the birds don't come in so much, as I put them...
  • Blog post: Slowly slowly catch a monkey

Blogger: Aggie Rothon, Communications Officer Apparently we as a nation put on, on average, five pounds over Christmas. That’s quite impressive, even taking in to account the super size me tins of Quality Street sold everywhere pre-Christmas. The BBC seems to have taken this bit of information...
  • Forum post: Hello From West Midlands. I have a query??

Hia Folks I wanted to join a bird watching forum, and RSPB seemed the obvious choice. I am in my 40s, married with teenagers. I've been a bird lover all of my life. I also love to draw and paint birds and small animals. I'm from near Wolverhampton, West Midlands. Where is everyone else...
  • Blog post: This weekend...Prepare for your Birdwatch

The countdown to the Big Garden Birdwatch is on! It’s now just three weeks until it’s time to sit down, perhaps in your favourite chair, and look out your window for just one hour, counting the birds in your garden. So, how can you make the most of your Birdwatch? Just how are you going...
  • Blog post: The jigsaw puzzle of life

Blogger: Communications Officer Aggie Rothon I am incredibly lucky to live where I do. If I leave my house in any direction I can always find myself surrounded by the magnificence of nature. So I’m not missing out, now that the nights are drawing in and I have had to reroute my after-work dog...
  • Blog post: Soiled, but stepping boldly forwards in peace

If the change in weather to cold mornings and dark evenings hasn't been enough to dampen spirits, a burst soilpipe in our office block has snuffed out the remaining cheer lingering from the warm start of this month. Our new office mantra: "Wake up and smell the beings". Umm. Full roast...
  • Blog post: He's a jolly good fallow

If you commute in and out of London, at some point in your life you'll no doubt feel stuck in a rut; the same old, same old. But 'tis the rutting season, so Bushy Park and other open spaces are echoing to the bellow of frisky deer . The warm weather of late has helped stir the deep emotions...
  • Blog post: Moth eaten? Bring on the tits!

A blazing start to October will this week turn to a more traditional autumnal month , with forecasters predicting snow in the UK before Christmas - yes it's just a couple of months away! So, it's time to put away the shorts and crop-tops and dig out the woolies and hats with ear-flaps. If...
  • Blog post: City breaks

A study of bird numbers, used to reflect the health of our environment, has revealed a north and south divide; with birds doing better in the north than they are in the south. It's a huge generalisation, but it does paint a fairly desperate picture, and that's where we are. Politicians and...
  • Photo: "PATTY'S PLUM" POPPY

This is my favourite poppy, Patty's Plum, which has silky petals and a dramatic centre to the flower. (taken on 7.6.2010)

Here's a couple of newly fledged starlings. I saw these in my garden in the spring of 2008. They certainly brought a smile to my face.
  • Photo: 2309

This was a great moment for my wife and I, it makes us smile every time we see it. I took this still image on my new Fuji camera. It is one of our several regular visiting Squirrels in our front garden. No surprises though, we called this one Hazel.

A local pheasant struts across the lawn confident in his stunning plumage - and I thought it was MY garden!
  • Photo: 2181

Nyjer seed feeders in the garden are certainly worth the effort. On a daily basis, we are entertained by anything from one to 30 plus goldfinches at a time. Charming moments indeed.
  • Photo: 2181

For some considerable time now, we have put out nyjer seed feeders in our garden. Our efforts are regularly rewarded as we are often 'charmed' by anything from 2 to 30 plus goldfinches just a few yards from our window.

Eight butterflies, all on one clump of daisies! It must be my lucky day...
  • Photo: 2152

Looks like a bird, moves like a bird, sounds like a bird, eats like a bird... but it's a moth. Why? Mindboggling.

Not too often you see one of these in the garden
