Thank you
Burmilla
If it wasn't for the Big Garden Birdwatch this year we wouldn't have known that we have not only 2 Lesser Redpolls visiting on a daily basis....but a Siskin as well! Thank you!

January Sightings at Dove Stone
rachel.downham
A quick update on what's out and about this month so far. This week at Binn Green we've seen Crossbills feeding on the Larch cones. Good one. In fact, the whole area around Binn Green has been absolutely buzzing so it's worth checking out. On and around the feeders at Binn Green we've...

Wednesday walk and birds
Mark Brandon
I took a walk around the reserve yesterday and it was hard to think we are still in January. Great tits, robins, goldcrests and even a mistle thrush were singing, the snowdrops are coming up and it felt just too mild for a winters day. I noticed that the temperature at 8pm last night was around 10 degrees...

Poorly goldfinch
Birdwoman
We have a large flock of goldfinches in our garden at the moment and I noticed one has a bald patch around its eye (see below). I am wondering if it has some kind of eye infection. Can anyone help?

Some Of My Current Regular Garden Visitors
Ella
I haven't taken many pics in recent months of the birds that visit my garden, but have started again, and thought I'd post a few. Nothing exciting, I'm afraid. No rare species, but I'm always thrilled to see any birds coming here. They're so wonderful to watch. Sorry the pics aren't...

Re: Finchtasia and my new finch flocker
Syntarsus
Another pic of the beast. Today I counted 12 birds all feeding at once which was a record for me. It has 20 perches though Goldfinches seem to like a bit of space and attack other birds sometimes when they're on a nearby perch. Also saw the first redpolls today - four came onto the feeder.

Crossbills
rachel.downham
Sunday gave us great views of a flock of over twenty Crossbills feeding on a Larch just past Ashway Gap. It's the first time that we've seen Crossbills on this side of Dove Stone; so far the best place to see Crossbills has been at Binn Green. At Ashway Gap itself there were two male Bullfinches...

Early signs of Passage
John & Judith Rogers
Oh dear! it’s got round to August again. The birds down the Lonning have generally fallen silent, busy raising and feeding their young - but if one walks along quickly and quietly, you can run across small parties of young in the hedges waiting to be fed by their industrious parents: Willow Warblers...

Massive Mistle Thrush Movement
Mark Brandon
After a quiet couple of weeks, more birds have been in evidence over the last couple of days. A massive flock of over 90 mistle thrushes has been flying into trees around the Gatehouse from nearby Sandy Ridge. This is a record count of these large thrushes at The Lodge-and quite possibly a Bedfordshire...

Hi all! Sorry for the delay in posting these, as they are from last weekend (Saturday). Common Sandpiper Hadn't seen a Common Sandpiper before and this one landed quite close to the hide so I managed to get a close up of it. It didn't stay there long though and soon disppeared to...

Marsh Sandpiper - still at home at Blacktoft!
Michael Andrews
The marsh sandpiper heads the cast of waders currently present at Blacktoft. It has now been in this part of the Humber for 20 days! Today, like most of last week, singleton lagoon was the place to find this special bird. Other waders include almost 200 Black-tailed godwits, 14 spotted redshank, 65 dunlin...

Hedging our bets
Peter Langham
Hi, There is always work to be done, so I spent most of the weekend in the wildlife garden. What started as a day of gardening, ended up as a find the nest contest. I expected to find this nest as we had seen a whitethroat carrying food into this bush, the one against the wall just inside the garden...

It's pouring with rain as usual here today so I wasn't expecting much excitement in the garden, but look what arrived! There were 5 babies but I couldn't get them all on one photo. Mum and dad were very busy feeding them all, and what a noise the little ones were making! "feed me, feed...

Lunchtime drama and a brand new baby
Sparrow
First of all the lunch time drama. A young goldfinch took up residence on our kitchen window bottom - on the inside! He must have flown in through the open doors when we were outside. Maybe he was trying to find refuge from the heavy rain at the time, and he made himself at home. I got a tea towel...

Mixed emotions! I watched a sparrowhawk swoop down into my garden and catch a goldfinch. It plucked the little bird, then carried it onto my low wall, where it proceeded to eat it. Nature!

Nyjer seed feeders in the garden are certainly worth the effort. On a daily basis, we are entertained by anything from one to 30 plus goldfinches at a time. Charming moments indeed.
