  • Blog post: RSPB wind policy trumped by misleading media

Some of you may have seen some misleading and plain wrong reports in the media that the RSPB has joined forces with Donald Trump to fight an offshore windfarm near Aberdeen. The orginal Mail and Times articles even contained quotes attributed to Ian Francis, the RSPB area manager for north east Scotland...
  • Blog post: A tall story

Until this week, if anyone had told me that I would see a sandhill crane in the UK I'd never have believed them. OK, so there were three previous UK records, but these were predictably in the far flung corners - Orkney and Shetland, plus a record in County Cork. Surely there was no chance of seeing...

  • Blog post: Dotterel detectives

MPs are finally heading off, a little belatedly, on their summer holidays. I imagine they will all take care to avoid being photographed in overly glamorous locations, lest they are accused of being frivolous in a time of national austerity. As well as exercising caution over where they are seen,...

A question: What do NFU Scotland, the Scottish Crofting Federation, the Scottish Agricultural College, The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, Scottish Land & Estates and RSPB Scotland all have in common?. The answer Waders – or to be more precise the Wader Friendly Farming Initiative...

  • Blog post: Sad news from Aberfoyle

Today we bring you some sad news - the Aberfoyle osprey nest has failed. The female stopped incubating her eggs just over a week ago, and they've now gone cold with no hope of hatching. We're not too sure why this happened, but it might have something to do with the weather. We are still...
  • Blog post: Milvus Milvus - such a fantastic bird, they named it twice...

After the excitements of our hunting Peregrine pair last Saturday at the rock , my pulse had only just returned to normal on Monday, when a flying visit sent it rocketing skyward once again. Standing on the viewpoint at Monday lunchtime, something caught my eye circling high above the rock – a...

  • Forum post: Birding sites in Inverness and surrounding area

Hi Everyone, I will be moving up to Inverness for six months for work, and wanted to do some birding while I'm in such a good area! • Forum post: Up with the Lark, well, Chaffinch!!

Just a few shots I took while feeding the birds this morning. We do get other breeds as well, but this morning you wouldn't have thought so!! I thought the early morning sun ahows off their colours quite well.
  • Forum post: Re: Jay's

The jay can be found in Scotland where there is suitable woodland habitat. However there are large areas that are unsuitable for this shy woodland species. A really good way to check the distribution of birds is to use the animated map function on the Birdtrack website linked here . Well worth reporting...
  • Forum post: Re: Inverness and surrounding Areas

Hi Blackbird et al, I'm a regular to the Inverness area, it's often overlooked in favour of the West Coast but there are some real gems in the area. There is also less rain and consequently fewer midges! RSPB have several reserves nearby, most of them quiet and not very well-known, but very...

As I Put out food scraps, the local house sparrows (who have bred in my garden) began eating the scraps and bird feeders. This may not sound very exciting, but when I counted them, there was over 43! No other breeds visit my garden but them! Amazing.

Heading to school as usual something caught my eye, and I turned. A sparrowhawk had landed in a gutter chasing a bird. He sat for a second, and flew off again. His orange plumage hypnotised me, and I stood for ages. Then I was late! Well worth it.

I run a small Bird &Parrot sanctuary on a small Scottish island This girl was found in a small cage in a dark garage in Glasgow. She now is happy and well. It made me feel that all the work is worth while when I see her now.

A morning walk at Fort Augustus brought us to an old cemetery, close to the hills. The only sound was birdsong. A woodpecker drumming and a cuckoo calling, joined by song thrushes, robins, blackbirds and warblers. Unforgettable, absolutely priceless!

It had been a long day walking with a heavy pack when two black grouse chased each other across our path and just for a moment the day became brghter and the packs became lighter. We went on our way with a new spring in our steps.
