  • Forum post: Sparows

Over the past year or so we have experienced a significant increase in the number of house sparrows about. The number we get to our feeders is impossible to accurately measure as sparrows can be concealed in the hawthorn hedge but we have counted over thirty and reckon there could be as many as fifty...
  • Forum post: Re: Sparrowhawks

This is true. I have two photographs in my hall way. One is of a juvenile sparrow, not long out of the nest. Fluffy feathers and still with the remnants of the beak it was hatched with. Right next to it is a photograph of a Sparrow Hawk having its lunch with a sparrow. Both photographs were taken within...
  • Forum post: lack of wild bird sightings

We also live facing open farmed countryside . We thought that when moving here 5 years ago the area would provide us with views of many wild birds, but this has proved to be the opposite. In the city of Nottingham the gardens have wild birds, foxes and even squirrels. Here we don't see any sparrows...
  • Forum post: BGBW - no sparrows!

Just completed BGBW - saw just one sparrow! Almost a complete collapse compared with previous years when they've easily reached double figures in our garden. Put out a variety of food and titbits to try and tempt them but no show! Had a few visits from a male Sparrowhawk a couple of weeks ago and...
  • Forum post: Juvenile house sparrows

Anyone else seen juvenile house sparrows in their garden? We saw a fully fledged male, but he had tell-tale downy feathers on his back and belly still.
  • Forum post: How can I attract more birds into my garden?

We live in a new build house (built 2009) but our garden has really started to mature with the leylandii, cherry trees, magnolia and other shrubs starting to take form and providing a lot of protective cover for the birds. We have situated a bird table, feeding station, fresh water and various hanging...
  • Photo: Birdman of Paris

I call this photo "The bird-man of Paris because whilst visiting one of Paris's garden there was an abundance of sparrows sitting in the hedges waiting to be fed.
  • Forum post: Some Of My Current Regular Garden Visitors

I haven't taken many pics in recent months of the birds that visit my garden, but have started again, and thought I'd post a few. Nothing exciting, I'm afraid. No rare species, but I'm always thrilled to see any birds coming here. They're so wonderful to watch. Sorry the pics aren't...
  • Blog post: Unstoppable forces?

A silvery thread of sparkly water is the current focus of my life. It's a mental stream that bubbles and gurggles, carrying hope and energy as it gathers strength to become a swift flowing surge and then a powerful current out into the magnificent ocean of the world's conscience. Fancy words...
  • Forum post: Cleaning Nestboxes

Hi I am wanting to clean my nest boxes but at least three of them (3 of 4 that can be seen from the living room) are still being visited occasionally during the day (2 by tree sparrows and 1 by starlings). If I clean them now I am worried about disrupting their night time roosting. Should I just...

  • Blog post: Hostile times

Riots, financial crisis and global droughts. The world can be a hostile place. Cycling back home to Hackney from work was an unsettling experience. I didn't know what I'd find or encounter after passing the lines of parked-up buses in Balls Pond Road, which marked the exclusion zone. Neighbours...
  • Blog post: Hobbies = show-offs

Hobbies - at least 2, possibly more, were putting on a fantastic show hunting dragonflies over the north brooks yesterday (best seen from Nettley's hide or Jupp's view). A marsh harrier was also seen hunting the brooks. Spotted flycatchers can be found nr Jupp's view and on the edge of the...
  • Blog post: Get me an injunction!

I'd like to talk to you about footballer Rxxx Xxxxx, but that's old news now. I want an injunction on sustainability, then maybe we'd see some interest from our news media in the shocking state (and decline) of our wildlife . I admit we're not talking sexy species like tigers and elephants...

At least 1, probably 2 or 3 spotted flycatchers on the edge of the heathland (seen from bridleway) at 13.00 today - lots of other small birds in same area (goldcrests, chiffchaffs, treecreeper, blue and coal tits). Green sandpiper and common sandpiper still present on north brooks. Marsh harrier (juvenile...
  • Blog post: Conservation = Work and Dedication

Yes, the politicians have it right – we need the ‘Big Society’, but I have a slight feeling of déjà vu here! – the wheel being reinvented. Conservationists, in our case the RSPB, have been doing this for decades: looking after birds, making reserves, caring for the...

  • Photo: 2688

I was doing the washing up and saw two sparrows on my patio fence, about ten feet away. The male was jumping from side to side over the female and she was fluttering her wings and crouching. It took me a while to register that they were mating!
  • Photo: 2684

We're lucky in having plenty of sparrows visit our garden - but we can't work out why they're all male! Unless someone who lives near us has a whole gang of lady sparrows visiting them, the nesting season isn't going to go well...
