  • Forum post: "You shall not pass"

The girl is getting ready for her second attempt at her driving test and as a responsible parent I feel it is very important that she experiences many different routes and roads - from our short duel carriage way max 40mph to our green lanes with high hedges and unforgiving granite walls max 15mph. I...

  • Blog post: Any exciting Goose arrivals in the Bay yet?

This was a question posed by Original Goldfinch in another discussion, but I figured it deserved it's own one! I haven't had, or heard any exciting goose or swan reports yet, apart from Billc (one of the Wigtown Bay Osprey volunteers) who saw an A ustralian Black Swan last Tuesday (13th) from...

  • Forum post: swans

For the last 3 days I have been watching a black swan swimming about 2 metres behind a white swan on the same stretch of Thames. All seems quite calm, there does not seem to be any 'aggravation' between them. Would a white swan mate with a black one so could this be pre-mating ritual? ladyp
  • Forum post: Swan Lake!

Just a selection of Swans from my travels....... ' There's a double beauty whenever a swan Swims on a lake with her double thereon '... Thomas Hood ' I will play the swan, And die in music '... William Shakespeare ' Now wakes the hour, Now sleeps the swan, Behold the dream...
  • Forum post: Re: Mating Swans .. confused by boat?

Thanks - I don't think it's likely they're after food because the boat was new in Sept and has barely been used. It's owned by the canal trust and the main skipper is as puzzled as I am. He would know if anyone on a "pleasure cruise" had been feeding the swans from the boat...
  • Blog post: Pipe Cleaner Dragonflies Provide Inspiration!

In January, I was invited along to The Holy Trinity Catholic School in Newark-upon-Trent by Head of Foundation, Ella Mayfield. Ella informed me that she had received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund , sourced by The Trent Vale Landscape Partnership (TVLP) for the creation of two pieces of mosaic...
  • Forum post: Oiled swan in RSPB Adur reserve .. who to contact

I live in a houseboat overlooking the RSPB bird reserve in the Adur estuary. A pair of swans breed regularly by the houseboats, and there are usually swans about and I have never before seen one with oil on it. This one is heavily oiled on it's underside, with some on its head, but not it's...
  • Blog post: Spring sunshine...?!

After the recent rain...comes some sun! While it is still very muddy here at the Lakes (I highly recommend your wellies!) it is beautifully sunny too. Come down for a walk and to feed the ducks with some seed. You can spot the three Swans who have arrived on the lakes this week, along with a very...
  • Forum post: Cygnet on Avon/Kennet Canal

A cygnet appears to have adopted me. I've been feeding the ducks on the canal, but a cygnet appears to have become separated from its family. Usually, there is a family of swans who live along the canal in Staverton. Unfortunately, they have become very tame, and the parents, and now this cygnet...
  • Forum post: Help Please! Swan behaving peculiarly

Found quite large but still grey swan on cover of our semi-full swimming pool! Drinking water appearing above cover due to swan's weight, though not accepting food (bird food and bread). No obvious signs of damage, though unscared and appears unwilling to move on. Is able to climb out of pool but...

  • Blog post: Weekend catch-up

Hi all, Just a quick post today to catch you up with the sightings over the weekend. Sunday was the monthly WeBS counts, which covers all of the main waterbodies in the area. On the Aird Meadow we had 4 mute swans, 3 female goosander, 3 greylag geese (which have now been hanging around for quite...

Swanning Around - taken on a cold February day back in 2006, this swan waddled over to say hello.

I think that swans are probably the most elegant of birds and this one was so close to the hide I just couldn't resist takeing a photograph.

Breathless, staring, eyes watering I watched a Mute Swan flying in. On touchdown it pitifully flailed over and over, the lake was frozen. Stabbing at the ice with its bill in anger and disbelief it stood up, it was walking, unhurt, I breathed again.
