With the unseasonably mild weather this autumn and winter (apart from the last week or so!), the wildlife in our region has been demonstrating some rather strange behaviour. We've had everything from ducklings being born in October and an osprey staying in Bedfordshire until the end of November, to blue tits checking out nest boxes over Christmas. It’s fair to say that things have been a bit topsy turvy.
Even the herons at Verulamium Park in St Albans got caught up in it when they began repairing their nests in December, only to find they had to repair them again following the high winds in early January!
Hopefully the extra round of repairs won't be a sign of things to come as tomorrow sees the start of the new season for us at Verulamium Park. We'll be on hand to show everyone what life's like in the heronry over the next couple of months. Last year we had at least one chick fledge from each of the 14 occupied nests so fingers crossed that 2012 will be even better.
