Guest blogger: Amy Martin, Westonbirt Arboretum Information Assistant
Following a busy period of summer events at Westonbirt Arboretum, we ended the summer on a high at Westonbirt's much-loved annual Treefest event - a festival of all things woody!
In true British bank holiday fashion, the weather was trying, but hardy visitors were undeterred and turned out in their thousands! Our marquee was a hive of activity with friendly experts on-hand to show visitors what we'd caught in our moth traps, which included migrants all the way from North Africa!
One of the highlights of the weekend was the competition to name the Westonbirt woodpeckers - a family of great spotted woodpeckers that have been making quite a stir with visitors over the summer. So let us introduce you:
Mum woodpecker: 'Wendy', as chosen by Becky, aged 8
Dad woodpecker: 'Walter', as chosen by Hannah, aged 16 (+ Mum!)
The two baby woodpeckers: 'Oakley' and 'Basil', as chosen by Lucy, aged 13 and Sioned, aged 10.
There'll be plenty of excuses to come down and see us, with a cracking autumn events programme in the offing with a dusk bat walk, bat discovery day, owl prowl, and feed your birds day. Keep your eyes on the blog for more details.
