Window Bird Feeder

Not answered This question is not answered

Last Christmas we were given one of the RSPB Window Bird Feeders which is a great idea and we want to use it successfuly but no birds will come to it. Last year, after trying different food types, I eventually ended up taking the food out of it and putting it on the bird table where it vanished in a very short space of time.

It is located on a porch window, where there is minimal activity inside, especially at this time of year so birds shouldn't be scared away by movement inside.  I have just put it up again this year with mealworms in the tray, but so far there has been no interest in it.

Can anyone give me advice as to how we can get the birds to feed from it?

Thanks!

  • Hello Skye,

I was thinking of buying a window feeder and would also appreciate advice on types and placement etc. I think perseverance is part of the answer.

  • hi skye, the trouble with any type of feeders that go near a window, is the

reflection in the glass, look at some of the other posts, try looking from the birds point of

view, they may see all sorts of reflections in the glass, which makes them very warey,

the only other way is to put something between the glass and the feeder, hope this helps. best regards mac

  • Hi Skye

Have you tried puttng another type of bird food in your window feeder? Maybe peanuts or sunflower seeds?

  • Hi Mac,

Thanks for the advice, will see how things go and if any interest as I have only just put the feeder up for this year -definitely something to consider though.

    Thanks again

  • Thanks - will see how things go with the mealworms and then maybe try something else

  • Hi Skye

I also have a window feeder that I bought from Jacobi Jayne. I have tried it with live mealworms, sunflower hearts and peanuts and I haven't managed to attract anything to feed from it either.

Maybe my visiting birds have enough food to eat and they don't want to use the window feeder. :-(

I have considered screwing it to the fence instead

    Best wishes Chris

  • So am I the only one that gets these to work, the kids love them!!

They have only been up for a couple of weeks, I have 2. They are down as the icicles have fallen + taken them both out :-(( They are really great + I have both v close on a south facng window near where I sit at the dinning rm table as I am now. I fill them with a mixed bird seed + the blue bonnets + robins seem more than hppy to pop in + eat lots. Have found one tha fell in lots of the snow - still need to find the other might have to find a diff position due t all the snow.

Hope that you soon find that someone visits!!

  • I have got one, and the coal tits and blue tits use it. I put a bit of YouTube footage up on here sometime back that I took with the iPhone.

I fill mine with black sunflower seeds. They haven't really used it for a few days, but they were back yesterday.

The birds are utterly unconcerned by my presence on the other side of the window.

Good luck in getting attracting some birds to your window feeder. It's a fantastic treat if they do start using it! ;o)

  • hi skye and good morning, in answer to the one re-birds flying into glass

one of the things i did was whitwashed inside an area around feeders, inside glass

with a small hole in which to look, you could get some sort of couloured

board to stand inside then the birds will not fly into glass, keep us informed. best regards mac

  • Hello Skye

We have had one of these feeders for several years now and we have it on the patio door to our lounge.

We have peanuts in it and find we get lots of blue tits and great tits.

At the moment we are refilling it every afternoon and morning.

We have just put up one of the peanut feeders that stick to the window along side it and the birds will go on this as well. This came from mum-in - law who had no success with it  - she had patio windows onto a balcony.
