2 + 1 = 3 Yellowhammers
petercf
Having had 2 yellowhammers visit our feeding station last year, only to lose one to our cats, we went back up to 2 birds earlier this year. Then amazingly today we now have 3 yellowhammers. Interestingly they spend most of their time on the ground.

Bird feeding
Peter
I'm lucky enough to have an area of oak woodland at the bottom of my garden which was completely overgrown and I've been attempting to make both accessible but also wildlife friendly- through nest boxes, log piles etc. My question is will birds bother to seek food there while I'm busily feeding...

Muntjac
JD6E
We have a pair of Muntjac who have started reglarly visiting our garden and grazing on various plants and windfalls for a short time. My first question is should we try and encourage them by putting out some sort of food? If yes, what should we feed them? Clearly they like windfall apples...

Coal tit cache!
Mr Q
Hi everyone, I have been watching the multitude of coal tits that frequent my small garden and raid the feeders. I've noticed that some of them take their seeds (sunflower seeds at the moment) and rather than eat them, appear to be poking them into the grass/soil and returning for more seeds. I know...

Re: Pink berry suet pellets (McDonalds v Michelin)

Thank you all for your replies. I'm ashamed to admit that I could bear the absence of robins demanding food no longer and acquired a pack of similar-to-Wilkinson's pink berry suet pellets - and the robins are back already, aaaah. Mr and Mrs Robin are now doing that strange thing where they...

Long Tailed Tits question
Accipiter
Hi Everyone, Two Long Tailed Tits are regular visitors to the garden and they make the use of the feeder with fat balls in. However, I read somewhere that when the warmer weather comes along, it's not advisable to purchase fat balls. As I haven't purchased anymore. The Long Tailed Tits no...

I'm going to feed the birds all year round. Is this ok?
CrazyDaizy
Hia Folks I'm new to this website, but have already had loads of lovely replies to other messages I have posted. In the past, I've only ever fed my Garden Birds during the winter. But in the last few years I've heard it's ok to feed them all year round. So I plan to start doing...

How much do you spend on your birdies?
Hawky
I have no idea how much the average cost of a feeder, food, etc, is, and I was hoping others could share their average spend on birds! How much would you say a feeder should cost? How much money on food per week? Any input is valuable to someone with a small income a month!

Re: Bird Free Zone
Syntarsus
Apart from next door what's the rest of your neighbourhood like? Do you see sparrows, finches doves or pigeons in your locality? I think the food you use can make a big difference. Next door to me the neighbour's feeders get very few visitors compared to mine. I think this might be because...

which nuts?
Goldfinch
I have some out of date almonds, cashews, pine kernels and sesame seeds, and also some unsalted peanut butter (pure peanut only). Can I crush and give any of these to the birds visiting my garden who are costing me a fortune in commercial feed? Also, any ideas how to stop pheatsants (up to 12 at a...

Window Bird Feeder
Skye
Last Christmas we were given one of the RSPB Window Bird Feeders which is a great idea and we want to use it successfuly but no birds will come to it. Last year, after trying different food types, I eventually ended up taking the food out of it and putting it on the bird table where it vanished in a...

Dangerous Fat Ball Feeder
pippy
Hello, this is old news for me, but I have only just joined the RSPB community so I wanted to share it with you all as a warning. We have always had a variety of bird feeders - from old flower pot saucers to very modern nijer feeders. Amongst them we have a variety of feeders for fat balls - including...

Late summer lack of garden birds?
IanH
We often get asked where have all the birds gone in the late summer and autumn months. Many people fear the worst or think they have done something to put them off. I thought i would take this chance to point out a few things to remember about wild birds at this time of year that might explain why they...

Apart from nuts and seeds, I started putting out cheap Morrisons flapjack for the birds and they love it. Among those heading for the treat are blackbirds, sparrows, starlings and robins. Only the woodpigeons don't seem interested.

Dominant blackbirds

I seem to have a dominant blackbird couple nesting in a large laurel hedge. Although this is great, is there any point encouraging other birds into the garden? The blackbirds seem to scare off other birds. Does this only happen when they are feeding their young at this time of year? The blackbirds feed...

Hi Owain21 - Basically, rats are attracted to food - any food. Food that is left out, and easily accessed, can and will be taken by rats. Rats move quickly and are excellent climbers and have no problem climbing vertical brick walls, fences or trees and bushes. They are mainly active at night and feed...
