We're about more than just birds (though obviously we like them a lot).

  • Here in my bit of Shropshire they have appeared in much larger numbers over the past two or three days as have the starlings - it is now getting colder, darker and murkier so guess they are coming into the woods that surround us to get an easy meal!  From January onwards last year they fed on the fields where we walk each morning and we were able to watch them at close quarters which was great.

Has anyone seen any yet? I often see flocks of them flying over our rural office in the autumn / winter but not spotted any yet!

Can't wait for them to arrive in Shropshire! Determined to get decents pics of them this year!!

Just seen 6 or so in my back garden along with a fieldfare

  • Welcome Salar! They seem to be popping up everywhere now!!

This morning I spent half an hour watching a flock of about 30 - 40 fieldfares on my crab apple tree here in Dorset.I have only ever seen 1 or occasionally 2 of them here before but obviously word has got around the fieldfare community ( maybe by 'Twitter' ?!) .

  • Hi

Ive just joined - to say that....

There are loads of Feildfares around here - Lee 0n solent - Hants - a flock of about 30 the other day - two of which seem to have taken up residence in out mock cherry tree which has lots of berries left - at the moment- and theyre chasing off all others including the resident blackbirds who are quite upset!

And large numbers in Gosport nearby - which is quite built up!

I am expecting a mass invasion of our tree sometime - which happened a few years ago when they strippped it...

  • Hello Whirly, there seems to be great numbers all over the country . Hope your invvasion happens.

  • Hello everyone. I had around 20 fieldfares in my tree in my garden yesterday in Hitchin. A few have been hanging around for the last few days but I've never seen so many as yesterday. Lovely sight..

  • We have atleast two Fieldfare in our garden. CH7 North Wales. Arrived a day or so ago. Last year only stayed for a short time, hopefully they might stay a little longer this year. Enjoying the apples I put out for them. Chasing off anything that gets too close to their food.

  • I also have a fieldfare who has stripped my cotoneaster of its berries over the past few days. A very aggressive bird - I feel quite sorry for my regular blackbirds.

Have also had about 10 redwings in my garden a lot this week - they don't appear to be eating anything though.

The greater spotted woodpecker was a real treat in the snow on Wednesday.

I have seen hundreds of them in the carpark at work in Berkshire in the last three days. See the attached photo.

They are stripping the berries from the pyracanthus.

  • I live in Ledbury Herefordshire ,we have had flocks of fieldfairs eating the berries right outside our living room ,i have counted 21 flocked so far

  • How about a flock of 100s of redwings with a few fieldfares mixed in eating the berries off the street trees in Holloway, N. London.  Not exactly a rural location, but a wonderful sight, despite the mess they've left behind!

I think birds and wildlife in general will be taking a hammering during this exceptionally cold snap. We need to take some positives from it, and this urban showing of fieldfares/redwings is certainly one!

  • Hello everyone, The fieldfares and redwing have made it to the sussex coast. I live 100yards from the beach and i had 2 f/f and 4 r/w in the holly tree in my front garden all day today - brilliant!!!
