We're about more than just birds (though obviously we like them a lot).

  • Has anyone visited here regularily, I am a newbie and looking for guidance or help.... I've walked around but was wondering if there are any hotspots.

    Thanks

  • Hi Martin

It's my local patch. The best spots for birds are Lavell's Lake and Sandford Lake. I've marked where the hides are on the map below. Click to enlarge.

There's also another hide which overlooks the recently restored Lea Farm lake but this is for members of FOLL (Friends of Lavell's Lake).

Lavell's and Sandford are best in Autumn and Winter for ducks and water birds like herons, egrets and water rails. A good number of snipe have been present recently. In the Spring and Summer there's usually warblers in the scrubby areas around the lakes. Common terns nest on the tern rafts on Lea Farm lake and hopefully on Lavell's.

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks TJ, maybe see you around the lake :)

  • Hi Martin, just saying welcome to here :-)

April & May can often be beset by the blasts of winter, when a cold wind sends temperatures falling. Since this coincides with the flowering of the Blackthorn, the cold snap is known as a 'Blackthorn Winter'.
