GOLDFINCHES

Answered (verified) This question is answered

just joined the site today,

Question,

Is it unusual To have in excess of 20 Goldfinches descending all at once to feed on my Sunflower hearts and Niger seeds I live in a Town adjacent to an industrial estate / busy railway line and about 500 M from open farming land, Some of them behave like youngsters wanting to be fed I do have a lot of feeders out but not enough spaces for them all to feed on at once so there is lots of squabbling and carry on as to who gets fed first.

Is there anything else I can do for them ?

Many Thanks,

  • Its certainly not unusual, i has approx 78 in the summer and i loved it, they are lovely charming little birds which bring beautiful colour to your feeders. I have 2 sunflower heart feeders and 2 nyger seed feeder , one is a 4 perch and the other a 14 perch but i  my wife had bought me a 20 perch nyger flocker for xmas so the goldies can have a treat on the 25th.

  • Hiya Folga welcome to the forum from Sheffield.

Well done for getting the Goldfinches on your feeders.

It's not unusual to get large numbers of them i get around 30 in one go and some other members get far more than that and as you say a lot of squabbling takes place.

You are doing all you can with the hearts and niger.

Also keep a look out for Redpolls depending where you are in the country you may get them too.

  • Hello Folga and welcome to the forum from Lancashire.

It's lovely to have a whole charm of goldfinches, and it isn't at all unusual to have 20 or more. I regularly have up to 30 at once and make sure I have enough perches for most of them on the feeders. The ones without a perch will often push the others off, and then there will be a huge squabble. We have been saying on the forum that this has been a good year for them. They seemed to bring babies to the garden for months on end.

Alan is right, the navigation on this forum is unbelievably confusing, so please do study the forum map. You can download it and use the links from the document to open up the appropriate sub-forum.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Wow a 20 percher to look forward to you lucky chap Mrs Welshviking must have taken out a new mortgage to keep that filled up for your huge flock. I will be inspecting your photos with envy next year

  • Welcome Folga.  As everyone else has said flocks of Goldfinch are not unusual.  I had a lot in the Summer, but have only a few now, (the others must be down at your place!).  I'm sure they'll be back.

    So long,
