Question from my class this morning - how many bones does a red kite have and how many bones does an owl have?

Can't wait for the answer to this one..and will the number be the same for most birds.

No idea of the answer to the specific question of owls and kites but the number of bones will vary from species to species. The length of neck and number of toes being obvious examples.
I know nowt :)

One key adaptation is the fusing of bones into single ossifications, such as the pygostyle. Because of this, birds usually have a smaller number of bones than other terrestrial vertebrates
Miss , me Miss , aww please Miss . . .
I came across a figure of 122 bones in a bird on average. I think we have 206. I'd go with that and bluff the kids. I'm sure you've had to do that many times before ;)
Thank you for the responses all, guess I'll have to go for the figure of around 122 lol
There is a lot of variation. For instance most owls have fourteen cervical vertebrae (we have seven) and other species have more and some less. It's probably mostly in the spine that the greatest variation exists.
