Falcons in London's Barbican?

Answered (not verified) This question has suggested answer(s)

Does anyone know if there are a pair of Peregrin Falcons frequenting the very tall tower blocks around the Barbican, London?  I am sure they are but I also know that there are a pair nesting on the OXO Tower and don't know if it's the same pair, or a different pair.  I work opposite the tower blocks on the 12th floor of an office block and cannot get a closer view but their flight and wing structure makes me believe that they are not pigeons. I would say definitely falcon/kestrel type.  They frequent the tower blocks between March and September/October and I noticed them last year as well.

Confirmation please?  Thanks. Miss Kimbo

  • Welcome to the RSPB Community Miss Kimbo.

London has in excess of 20 pairs of breeding Peregrines so a Barbican pair is quite possible. You'll need some local knowledge to confirm, and I'm afraid I can't help you there.

Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?

  • Dear Miss Kimbo.

Yes, there are peregrines that can be seen around the Barbican and St Paul's area. John B is quite right in saying there are more than 20 breeding pairs now living in Greater London and we're now in to the breeding season.

The pair you have seen will be the subject of our Date at the Tate starting 16 July through to mid-September. They perch on the Tate Modern's chimney and we'll be next to the Millennium bridge every day with powerful telescopes to give people a free close-up view of these magnificent and noble birds.

Keep visiting our London web page for more details and I'll soon be posting a link in my blog to a webcam looking at another pair of London peregrines on their nest, so you'll be able to follow them - big brother style - as they sit on their eggs and raise their young.

  • Hi Tim

    How exciting!

I will look forward to following the web-cam.

I don't know, in between following the ospreys at Loch Garten, the peregrines in London, and my own little batch of garden birds I won't get anything else done!

    Best wishes Chris
