Hi all,
I was out on my local patch on Tuesday hoping to get a couple of decent bird pics. I was only only out about 15 minutes when I saw this sparrow about 20 yards away at a height of about 20 feet, chasing what looked like a large Dragonfly. I was so amazed by this spectacle on my little patch, that I just stood there jaw open watching the chase. It all happened so quickly and all in a space of about 3 feet circle. The sparrow took the Dragonfly very expertly and without too much trouble, it then seemed that the prey was so heavy that the bird almost dropped to the ground. It was only then that i remembered "I had a camera". Doh! What a plonker. But it was a) so exciting to watch that I forgot all about the camera and b) I
wanted the Dragonfly to get away.
The sparrow then took his catch away and I could just see him. I tried to get a shot but it was right at the very, very end of my lens. However, I have attached the pic which is about a 4 times crop. What I didn't realise was that sparrows to flying insects etc, I always thought they were dedicated seed-eaters. Obviously I was mistaken.
If you do what you've always done...you'll get what you've always got!
Hi Magone,
That must have been some spectacle! I say "Well Done Sparrow", and I am pleased he caught it.
Sparrows need insects to feed their chicks just like most other birds. Seeds come later. Having said that, adult sparrows eat most things from mealworms to seed to suet products to nuts ... and now dragonflies!
Cheers, Linda.

I have never seen this before, well spotted,by the size of it the dragonfly would have fed one or two hungry mouths
birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,just enjoy it while you can.
Brilliant, thank you so much for your prompt responses, much appreciated.
I only wish I'd got the shot! However, now I know, I shall be there........(and probably miss it again)!!
Wow... its fab... I had on idea they caught stuff mid-flight either.... clever fellow!!
Striving to be a better Photographer whilst looking after two young children... :0/
Owning a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer... it makes you a Nikon owner!
Great photo! The dragonfly is freshly emerged (you can tell by the very shiny wings) and would have been relatively slow and weak, so that's probably why it was easy prey for the sparrow.
psst, want to see my blog? http://robandmazza.blogspot.com
I am constantly in awe of your knowledge, Aiki.
What an amazing photo.
Best wishes Lolly
