Unfortunately it flew before I could photograph it but I'm hoping someone might recognise my description.
About the size of a Holly Blue
Pale apricot (too pale to say ''orange'') in colour.
Top wings bigger (rounded) than bottom with a wavy broad (in relation to wing width) beige marking down the middle
I couldn't find it in my book or on Google - so crossing my fingers

Hi MARJUS - thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I did try that link but it only came up with three buterflies that were definitely not it . The butterfly I saw did have markings just not those that the online software had so I had to input ''none''. The 'wavy' line down the middle of the upper wings was like a wash with a small paint brush sweep. And it was apricot (imagine a fresh fruti apricot , not the dried sort) coloured. Never seen such a butterfly before. Wish I could have snapped it with my old digi camera.
Hi Cirrus could it have been a Moth rather than butterfly?
Regards Alan

Sorry just can't think of anything with that description! Trouble is, there's so many aberrant forms out there that it makes guessing even harder (for me at least!). Maybe someone with a better butterfly knowledge will work it out for you! Sorry not been any help! Lol!
That's a good point Doggie!
I use this site.

wavy line very pale beige and vertical down top wing not horizontal. This beauty a moth ,has too much colour and too many markings j. The butterfly was so pale I called it apricot cos orange was simply too strong a colour
I really appreciate all your responses . Going to check our your site now EDGEBANDER
Sadly no :(
deteled post duplicate
Given the size I wonder if it was an aged/washed out Small Heath or aberrant Small Copper
I can't think of anything else and my two favorite sites for searching are down at the moment. Where did you spot it?
Caroline in Jersey
Going to moths it could be one of the thorn family
try SEPTEMBER THORN or one of the wave family

In my garden on a twig on the ground - in a big city. During the day. I do realise that some moths fly during the day but this just was not a moth
