ID confirmation on pipits please! :-)

Answered (verified) This question is answered

Both shots taken on Isle of Skye, (not great pics as taken with my old camera which had a smaller zoom and lower definition!)

This I think is a rock pipit, as he was on a rocky beach (Talisker Bay) and has the pale eye ring I associate with the rock pipits

Now this one was standing in a small brook, and singing! I'm thinking meadow pipit as it has a creamy 'moustache' going back from its beak down its cheek...

What do you think please?

  • Hello MarJus,

These are cracking shots of, as you have correctly observed a Rock pipit and a Meadow pipit. Slightly stockier than the Meadow pipit, the Rock pipit has long dusky streaks on the under parts and a blackish bill as well as a pale eye ring, visible in your photo. Meadow pipits as per your photo are often found in open and/or rough grassland, they have pinkish legs and heavily streaked greyish brown plumage.
