What is this bird?
AlisonGreen
This bird was sighted near Aviemore, it was quite nervous and only visited the one day and there was only one of them - have not seen this bird in the garden before. Your help with identification would be appreciated - could it be a redpoll or a rosefinch or something else? It is easily the size of...

I had just crossed the River Dee at Queensferry and the bird was flying roughly at right angles to me ie from the direction of the coast/Dee marshes towards Chester. It was flapping...

Mystery duck
Peter
I saw this duck (the one on the left) amongst a group of Tufted Ducks in a flooded quarry works in Surrey. I'm not sure what it is. is it a male Scaup by chance? But it's head seemed to be brownish.

Likely visitors in the snow - a quick guide!
IanH
We've been inundated with enquiries about unusual birds venturing into gardens since the snow hit. Here is a quick picture guide (illustrations by Mike Langman (rspb-images.com) ) to some of the birds that are likely to have been causing some of the confusion. Before diving into it I wanted to point...

This weekend... spot a swallow... or something else?
Katie Fuller
As I mentioned on Monday , swallows are arriving. They might be a bit slow to return because of bad weather here and in Europe, but be patient - they're on their way. If you get a good look at a swallow and see its unmistakeable forked tail, it's easy to identify. But beware - there are other...
