Have just seen this reference to midwife toads.
We have them in our garden!!
We live in a small village about 8 miles from Bedford and 3 miles from Sandy. We heard the strange noises they make and did some research and concluded that is the only thing it could be. The Bedfordshire Natural History Society were most helpful.
We haven't seen any but apparently they are so small and quite illusive. We just sit near the pond at night and enjoy them!
