  • I am delighted to announce the return of my (mostly) AWOL  finches. This morning I had 12 siskins, 2 greenfinches, lots of goldfinches and 2 lesser redpolls flocking down to my feeders, with 2 chaffies not quite sure whether to join them or not. 12 siskins at once is an all time record for me - the previous record was 2, so a massive increase!  Why they should suddenly re-appear I don't know. It has been pouring with rain for a few days now, and is warm for the time of year.

I didn't manage to get them all on one photo, and the pics are poor quality due to the rain. However, the pics do show what messy feeders these finches are - that feeder was clean and fresh out yesterday!!

Two lesser redpolls (both males) and 2 pairs of siskins.

  • Lovely photos Linda. As you know I'm not all that far from you but we don't see Siskins down here. Some Redpolls but not in gardens as far as I have heard.

    I know nowt :)

  • Congratulations, Linda. That's a wonderful collection of finches. Wow, twelve siskins, that's an amazing number.

You can never make predictions with birds. They can disappear for no apparent (to us) reason and then suddenly turn up again. Perhaps at this time of year they are on the move and noticed your cafe en route.

Nothing wrong with your photos. They look pretty good to me.

  • Since I started feeding the birds about 3 years ago I've always had a variety of finches (after waiting patiently for a few months for the first ones to arrive), but only the goldies come in vast numbers - except for last year when I had up to 30 regular redpolls. I've never had a bullfinch though.
