This isn't any old chaffinch! This is a Maderia Chaffinch, endemic to the island of Maderia. Initially I found them a bit shyer than "our" chaffinches...until on a levada walk where loads flocked where visitors gathered at a waterfall where they were the bold chaffinches I was more familar with! They were quite happy coming close when some scraps from the lunch was on offer, they also make a call unlike anything I've ever heard any of out chaffinches do! They had me so puzzled at the noise they made I had to sit and watch one make this call before I was really convinced it was actually them and not some other bird!
